I have just scored on 70ish of the OffScreen pictures and I have to say 65 of these were absolutely terible. Dogs, cats and bloody kids looking of the screen! Why do people upload these snaps that have no place other than in their photo album? In my shot I tried to be abit more creative and am going to finish with my lowest score yet because not one person seems to have looked at the shot and understood anything about it. I'm gonna smash my monitor now and give up submiting or voting. Balls to all of it!!!!

Sorry to hear that. Is your score taking a dive too?

Why do people upload these snaps that have no place other than in their photo album? Well, perhaps they see it differently than you? Perhaps they want to learn something? Perhaps they are having fun? Perhaps they're not quite at your level of photographic sophistication yet and are emulating you? Perhaps they don't take all of this as seriously as you? Who knows? What difference does it make?

By the way, your profile says your favorite shots are animals. I suppose that's not including dogs or cats.

Go vote on Portraits - they are wonderful! Even most of the dogs and kids are great.

Maybe they fitted it into a stereotypical snapshot like a dog, cat, or kid and decided to not look or understand it. Look in the forums, maybe your creative genre was attacked in the forums by someone who entered a dog, cat, or kid pic who complained that their shot was not looked at or understood.

IMO it's not that the dog, cat, cloud, or kids pictures are bad......

It's that they are not original subject matter for this site.

There is a time and place for actors, models, or whatever... But when it comes to people I usually prefer to see someone patiently wait for a photo to present itself, rather than to force an insincere moment.

There is very little originality left, especially concerning subjects. I doubt you will find anything that hasnt already been photographed in one way or another. Originality is also based in the experience of the viewer. Those who are exposed to more photographs, or who have been on DPC for longer will see a repeat of images more than someone who started last week. Pictorial images of people have been around since cavemen, and yet people continue to take pictures of them and do them quite well. Originality is a factor, sure, but a good photograph is a good photograph no matter what the subject.

I think this is what the walmart portrait photographers do... at least it seems that way.

My score giving declined big time on this challenge. repeated subject matter doesn't even make me flinch, but if your gonna take a picture of your dog, don't just snap a pic and call it good. I saw some VERY good animal pictures, as well as some horrible ones (as far as the challenge directtions went).

I didn't enter in the challenge for a reason...

This challenge is still in progress ... which is why it makes sense to me to have this discussion AFTER the voting, and to NOT post specific references here.

Isn't posting a thread to the effect of "all the photos in the ____ challenge are crap" an "attempt to influence or manipulate the voting?"

I guess is probably a good example of an unposed shot. I doubt HCB has entered though.

Would you admit that the percentage of cat, dog pics on the DPC is higher than any other subject by a pretty large margin (except maybe kids).

(Just so you know I do not vote a pic down because it is a cat, dog. I judge each of them on thier own good merit. I have rated about half a dozen of them at a 7 or higher on this challenge.)

Mostly I think that is about accessability. That and familiarity/ lack of embarassment.

Looking at the photo posted, I can't help but think of all the comments it would get about oof, dof and exposure. I know it's a famous photo by a famous person, and probably a lot of other people know about it also, but that feeling remains that it would end up with a score in the 4's, and that's being generous.

Considering the majority of people who submit to challenges are parents with jobs I can understand that they are wanting to submit pictures of subjects they have access to. Not everyone can be shooting on location in exotic locations or in war-torn countries where action is every day and fairly unposed. I think there are a lot of people who do very well with the restrictions we have - meaning a week to think of an idea, obtain the necessary props needed, and shoot it perfectly. Yes, there are poor shots of dogs, cats, flowers, and pics, but there are also poor shots of more 'original' subjects too. The original post grouped all dogs, cats, flowers, and kid pics into bad photographs, which is what I am reacting to.

Incidentally, I do not agree with talking about current challenges as I do believe comments in the forums can, unfortunately, sway voters, but as long as people can start threads attacking types of photographs then people should be allowed to stand up for them.
