Right now im just practicing with my camera in my room. I try to just take pictures of family members. I shoot with ISO 400,F.4,and 1/250 shutter speed. I also have a manual set white balance. Usually when i take pictures the subject in the back is clear and the person closer looks blurry. I also use the focus ring to focus. What could i change?

your depth of field is too shallow to have both in focus. Either move the people so they are next to each other or at least closer or increase your aperature. If you shoot at f8 you will get more in focus but will have to use longer shutter speeds to compensate for the smaller aperature which may require you to shoot on a tripod.

you could also increase the iso to 800 which would eliminate the need for a tripod but the image quality will suffer a bit (more noise).

Enjoy.

Take a look at //www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/depth-of-field.htm, this site explains aperture and DOF.
