Okay well I don't want to hurt any feelings with this one but when you vote WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING???

I would LOVE for people to please tell me what they are thinking when they voted my my current entry in the centered challenge...

When I entered this picture I knew it wouldn't ribbon but I was expecting at least a low 6 from it. My entry meets the challenge rules, lighting is good, editing is good, idea is good, WHY THE FREAK ARE YOU GIVING ME 4's???

Everyone I have showed my picture too loved it and thought it was neat. I went thru the pictures and I picked out the winners of the challenge and personally I think the rest were pretty much average. Maybe I should just starting voting 1's and 2's for the good ones just so I can be a HATER!!!!!!!!!!

When this challenge is over I would like everybody and their mother to look at my picture and comment to tell me what you voted and why. That is the only thing I can think of that would make sense to me.

I am really hurt that I entered a good picture and it’s not doing good, WHY???
Anyone that comments I will recomment or just owe you a favor, whatever I have to do to get a comment telling me why you voted the way you did. This is killing me.

Edit to add, well here it is....

I know that I didn't do nearly as good as dstrohl but I tried and my model really liked the image.

I assume you mean until you showed it to the voters here?

I'm in a similar position myself. Mine's a charming and engaging image that meets the challenge, uses no trickery of post-processing, and is scoring 5.3 at this point. Happens to me all the time. I just grin and "bear" it.

R.

ETA: make that 5.1 now...

I dunno... my scores are right around what I expected (not entering makes predictions easy). ;-)

mine's almost a full point higher than i honestly thought it would be.

i can't figure the voters out either. . . .

'course, there's still time for it to drop to its expected range.

It's really weird sometimes. I mean I can understand sometimes that people don't personally like an image but it's like they are voting wrong ya know. Karmat congrats on a wonderful score. I guess I look at it like this. I know personally that I can get some good shots but I'm not entering challenges for just a "good shot" There is a reason we have a "challenge" and yet when someone meets the challenge it's getting voted low. I understand that not every picture can be eye candy and it's funny that even those aren't winning like they used too but what do people think of when they vote ya know. When I take a picture MOST of the time I take it because there is a challenge for it. Other photography I take for personal or business reasons but for DPC there is a special thought process that goes into the things I shoot because I have a challenge to meet. Then you meet the challenge and you get a crappy score. Just doesn't seem fair to me or others for that matter.

What is it that makes someone give a low score when lighting, subject, processing, focus, and so is is all good???? I just don't understand anymore.

Once the challenge if over, I will definitely make a point of commenting on your image if you tell me what particular challenge it was in and what specific image was yours.

In the interim, I would strongly suggest you eradicate this problem you have by doing what I do, namely 'TURN YOUR SCORES OFF".

I try not to get emotionally attached to my photos, but try as I might, I seem to have varying luck in that regard.

Oh, those folks you showed the image to, chances are they are your friends and that might have skewed their perspective a tad. :O)

You could try my new approach.... I'm not going to enter any more challenges for at least a month. I figure scores won't bother me at all! :-)

It might be because DPC is growing at an ever-more-rapidly rate than ever before... that gets us higher on the search engines and perhaps we do have a lot of people simply browsing the site who sign up for a free membership, vote a challenge or two, then make like a Tom and Cruise... People that never stay to really learn what the technicals are about or who don't care. Everyone has their own taste... you know what they say about pleasing people :) hehe I think it is exactly what you say though, people who vote like that want photos that are pleasing to the eye... screw the challenge title... they don't care really... only if it is purty :)

It's something to think about :) Oh, and a member of the SC could probably get you the stats on how long folks typically stay and how much they voted while they were here :) hehe

Reminds me of the discussion in this thread, among others. The word "good" is subjective and what some may find appealing others may find boring and uninteresting. I wouldn't let the score get you down too much and I will be happy to give you my thoughts when the challenge is over, but it's just another opinion. Trevor~

meh, it is all so subjective. I have a photo that I entered in a couple of local shows. In one it took 2nd place and in the other it didn't even make the first round of cuts. I take pictures that I like, and if they please other people great, if not it's no skin off my back.

I feel your pain; my centered III comp is currently at 3.84 and that will surely be my personal brown. Of course I knew mine would get hammered as it looked like chet after compressing the hell out it and adding blur just to get it to 150k. It is kind of my own personal rebellion that no one will notice but me.

We were talking about it (150k limit) here yesterday.

----Hey, Go to the Photoshop Preferences>File Handling and change your image preview to "Never" when saving for DPC. On a 600 pixel square file at 72 dpi, the difference is about 110K, believe or not.

It is what it is man...Taste is subjective....Vincent Van Gogh wasn't appreciated until way after he was dead ...
