I have a 2 photos with the same problem that I need fixed. I'm limited by using GIMP to try and fix these shots. In both I have very strong blown out highlights from the sun. Here is an example of the shots. If anyone can fix this, can I email you the files to fix for me? Thanks alot everyone!!!

Blown highlights are next to impossible to fix, due to the fact there is no information in the blown out areas to work with. You can darken the blown areas some, but the details, (eyes, sides of noses, etc. porbably will not be saveable).

Did you shoot these in a raw format? If not you will probably be hard pressed to get any detail back in the blown higlights.

I have had limited success with any shots with blown highlight by combining two images. I always shoot in RAW so I simply create 2 exposures of the same shot as different files. One exposure is pretty much the exposure that I want and the second is under exposed to try and get back some of the blown highlights. I then stick them as 2 layers one on top of the other and mask out slightly the underexposed layer underneath the good exposure. It takes some trial and error with opacity levels so it doesn't look too fake but I've had some good results doing this to save a photo or two!

My internet is acting retarded so I might not be able to attach and email the files tonight. :( If not then I'll send them in the morning Mike.

Seems beyond help. Next to being blown out the DOF is too shallow. Your subjects are not in focus. I would reshoot

You can send me the original if you like. I will PM you with my email address.

how bout making a nice b&w....I'm not good at this but I converted it quick and burned the blown out areas and my lousy attempt took away the attention to the blown out areas.

Here is some serious work in PS with Shadows and Highlights and to be honest with you it doesn't get to a point where I would be happy with it, but it can show you that you can get some things done, and WAYYY more could be done if you shot RAW.
