I've only been in a couple of challenges, and haven't had anything that I liked enough to work on until now. But, I'm a wee bit confused 'bout one particular part of basic editing: so we're allowed to use adjustment layers. Does that include putting points on a curve line to selectively increase contrast? I tried looking through the threads, but haven't found anything. Please help! Thanks, alex.

Yes I believe it's legal in basic as long as you don't use a mask for the layer.

Yes, adjustment layers are legal as long as they're applied in Normal blending mode.

I don't see anything in the rules that disallows using the mask that is automatically created with the adjustment layer.

No expert, but I am 99% certain that you can't use any form of masking in Basic.

The mask in an adjustment layer is the same thing as a selection, and is not allowed in Basic. Yes, the mask is automatically created with the adjustment layer, but you can't change it/paint onto it -- the adjustment must be applied uniformly to the entire image.
