Hi, I have had a Canon 400D for while now, using 18-55 and 70-200, Rather bored of changin lenses each time something exciting happens in the distance...

I have been looking at the 18-200 Sigma and Tamron, thinking either one may meet my quest for focal rage :o)

But apparently they seem to lack sharpness at top end?

Is this going to be the comon thing with a lens of this length? Or if i push the boat out a little more will i find any gains?

Alternatively, does anybody have any lens recommendations?

Cheers, Andy

1st of all you need to get used to changing lenses if you really want to take good quilaty pictures second-- buy the best glass you can afford not the zoom that covers the most range!!lenses these days last longer than camera bodies

Hi Andrew, I sent you a PM regarding a nice lens I have for sale. As rider says, get the best QUALITY you can get in a lens as the glass will out-live the camera body 10 fold.

Well, that's not always true. It's impossible to take any quality of picture if you don't have the lens on the camera at the time; moreover, under certain conditions(stopped down a little, good lighting) the quality will be very close. Even the 'bad' consumer zooms are pretty good for the kinds of prints most people make. The things they lack are the flexibility of speed and excellence at all apertures, freedom from flare and distortion etc. If you're prepared to sacrifice that for range, compactness and a low price then that's fine too. I prefer fast primes, but that's because I shoot wide open a lot. Others' needs will vary.

The Tamron 18-250mm seems to perform the best out of these sorts of lenses, though there is obviously a compromise in image quality with that kind of zoom.

Photozone review here.

I have used the Sigma 18-200 OS quite extensively while traveling for the last 10 months. It is a very versatile all-rounder. Granted, it isn't as sharp as my 24-105L on the borders, but the centre sharpness is pretty good and USM post-processing seems to sort out the softness. Having said that, the test results on the Tamron 18-250 seem to be better, but I would want to test them back-to-back to make a decision.
