WARM COLOURS ARE AS FOLLOWS::::::::::::::::::

RED
PINK
YELLOW
BROWN
GOLD
TAN
PURPLE (in the middle)
ORANGE

((((((((((((((((The primary colours are red, yellow and blue.
The secondary colours are made by mixing the primary colours as follows: red + yellow = orange; red + blue = violet; blue + yellow = green.
Mixing primary and secondary colours together creates tertiary colours. These are dark browns, greens and greys)))))))))))))))))))))))

COOL COLOURS ARE;;;;;;;;;;

BLACK
WHITE
PURPLE
BLUE
GREEN
GRAY

Red, pink, purple, orange...those can be cool as well, depending upon how they are mixed with other colors. Please don't paint this challenge with such a broad brush.

Ah yes, I see...well, don't forget that according to the challenge descriptions some mixing is allowed.

"Create a photograph comprised of primarily cool colors."
"Create a photograph that is comprised of primarily warm colors."

yeah - green is a particular sticking point here - you can have a warm green if it is more to the yellow side, or a cool green if it is more to the blue side...

But yeah, i get the feeling people dont really understand what warm or cool means... it refers to the colour not the state of whatever object is that colour (if that makes sense).

They can be cool perhaps but they are not considered cool colours, by the vast majority of people. Red Orange Yellow tend to be regarded as the warm colours and Green Blue Indigo Violet as the cool ones (from the visible spectrum).

I really hope voters don't open up the interpretation of these challenges otherwise what was the purpose? It's really not that hard to choose traditionally warm or cool colours to shoot, without having to shoehorn another inappropriate colour.

I do agree that there are some colours which are more controversial...like green....so if that were me I'd shoot an overtly warm or cool colour to save any confusion. YMMV and all that jazz.

I went to this site and used this to try and figure out warm and cool colors.

Warm and Cool

To compare and contrast, I used these two descriptions: "Cool colors are soothing in nature." and "Warm colors are vivid in nature."

So far my choice to go in this direction is not working for my score lol

What is there to explain? A bluish-red is cool, an orangey-red is warm. A crisp bluish-peachy tone is cool, a deeper reddish one is warm. It's all in what the colors are mixed with that makes the cool/warm difference.

Doesn't anyone read Vogue or Cosmo anymore? :)

No no broad brush here.

When a person says Red is too hot of a colour to be warm, they are wrong.

Those colours are the basic colour wheeels that are used by ALL artists etc.

The colors of red, orange, and yellow are considered warm colors because they are the colors of fire. These hues are also said to advance, meaning they appear to come forward, making the walls feel closer.

Red, yellow, and blue are primary colors. They are the three pigment colors that cannot be made by mixing any other colors. These three colors are mixed to create all other colors and can be combined with white or black to create tints (lighter tones) and shades (darker hues) of these colors.

Someone said that? I agree, it shows a clear lack of understanding of what warm and cool colors mean.

I wouldn't say the dividing line is so precise, but it gives the general idea.

Careful. There are different primary colors for pigments, which work by subtracting light (red pigment removes everything but red and reflects that) and adding light.

In pigments, red, yellow, and blue are primary. You make green by adding blue and yellow.

However, when adding light, red, blue, and green are the primary colors. You make yellow by adding green and red light.

As you said, Juliet, see wikipedia. The two different primary color sets are over on the right near the top.

So people are dnmcing all those pictures for being the colours they are and not what effect they portray.. interesting.. that didn't even occur to me [I just assumed the feel of the picture is what determines the coolness or warmness]. I'm soo glad I didn't enter..

edit:: Makeup sites are pretty good at this..

I cannot remember who's picture it was, but ... I saw it as being a warm image, that's why I thought it didn't quite meet the challenge criteria.

black, grey and white have been mentioned here as cool colours, personally I find it hard to think of them as cool or warm, I'd consider them neutral. What do you all think?

True blacks, grays and whites are neutral. However, in the real world, most have a bias tint towards cool or warm.
