Hi all,

Here are some of my first ever pix. These were taken at a local pratice track using a 50mm lens on a Canon 20D. Thoughts? Ways to improve?

Thanks,
Dave

Your image #1 is the better of the group. You can see some reaction from the crowd. Watch where your lighting is coming from, especially with action. Also...viewers like to see action....so try to get some dirt flying or some space between the bike and the ground.....otherwise it can come across almost like a posed shot, when they aren't. Also watch your focus....prefocus on a set area and hold it there...as the subject enters the focal range fire a few shots off. If you look in image #4...the dirt is in focus but the bike has left the focal range.....a slower shutter would also have a similiar effect...so using your available lighting try to keep your shutter up fairly high...especially with fast action.

Judi, this was a practice event, so the riders are all fairly new. I was hoping to get some good high bank turn shots so it would get the dirt being thrown everywhere like you mention, but they went pretty slow in the turns. I need to go out on a race day for those pictures, I am sure they are quite dramatic. Or at least go when the more experienced riders are out on the track. (early morning I heard)

this one i shot at gravity park of my uncle, its hard to tell from the edit, but when your doing any motox its a good idea to get as low to the ground as you can. If i remember correct i was on my knees tucked on a lower part of the track. This gives you the look that the rider is going faster, and if they are jumping, they will appear higher in the air. the one of the quad, I did with a point and shoot on burst mode, we were riding on a figure 8 with huge banks that day, and this one i was laying right off the upper lip of the bank,

In the motorcycle pic, how did you get the color of the dirt like that, with the bright blue sky? Was it layers and hue changes to the dirt only? If so, how did you do it?
