Hello all,

I'm teaching a basic photography course, and we have one class left. I want to give them all a list of useful software they can continue with. None has Photoshop, but some may get it; they all have Elements.

I've a pretty extensive list of actions and plug-ins. What I'm looking for are stand-alones, or anything else that works with GIMP, Irfanview or other programs. Basically, cool stuff on the cheap, or least least without the enormous expense Photoshop (These are mainly adults who want to take better pictures, but aren't at all sure they want to be photographers. I'm just giving them the tools and knowledge to take it further if they want)

Any ideas?

Virtual Photographer is a good one, but not sure if you can use it outside Photoshop.

FastStone might be referenced in an introductory course.

Here's a free plug-in called SmartCurve that adds curves adjustments to Elements. It's also usable in PSP and anything that accepts photoshop plug ins. It also gives the ability to click a color on the image and it will set a handle at that colors location on the grid. I've been meaning to install it into PSP and try it but keep forgetting about it.

There is also www.getpaint.net. Similar to the GIMP, but from what I have heard its more intuitive. I would also search around to give them a list of web resources, starting with this site right here!

Then, if they get more into photography or graphics they could go in many different directions.

I have found that I just like reading about stuff whether or not I actually end up doing anything about it!

Here are 4 free filters from Nik Color Efex Pro that I use quite often.
