As I hinted at the last London GTG I was thinking about organizing a Canterbury (UK) Get-together. I now know that I'll be done with my exams by the date I had in mind, so here goes. June 7th is a Saturday, and it's also Artsfest on the University of Kent campus. The GTG would give you a chance to explore this ancient city, including its magnificent Cathedral, encounter loads of talented artists at the UKC and for those who want to stay till late see the fireworks over the cityscape.
Give me a shout if you are interested in this and depending on interest I'll post more details.

Went to Canterbury this weekend, and it looked very pretty :)
So work commitments allowing, I might be interested in another visit. It's a bit of a mission from Cambridge, but it's doable.

This sounds interesting. But maybe you should think about siting it a few miles west of Canterbury - about 61 miles west, to be precise?

Yeah, but Chaldon doesn't have a cathedral.

Slightly shocked. Caterham (on the same map) was my home town from ages five to twenty-something (me and Bill Nighy).

Now I see that being 61 miles due west of Canterbury has finally earned us the recognition we crave.

A draft route, subject to change. I'll probably change it later to take into account walking distances, wheelchair accessibility and the like.
Google Map of the draft route.
Starting point in Pound Lane, plenty of parking spaces around. Estimated time of departure: 9.30.
Over the river, through a park into Highstreet.
Visiting the Cathedral with its cloister.
Via Whitefriars to the Canterbury Castle.
Through Greyfriars park (ancient monastry).
Heading back to Highstreet and Westgate (panorama view of the city).
Lunch in Wetherspoons. Estimated time: 1.30pm
If MAK is with us, birthday cake offered by gloda.
Up to the University of Kent campus by bus or car.
Browsing the campus. Artsfest is happening, there will be stalls and artists everywhere until late.
Fireworks.

To give you an idea of costs:
Parking costs / train fare £?
Cathedral £7
Westgate Tower £1
Lunch £?
Bus fare to campus £1.60

Post any suggestions or questions you may have. Keep in mind that this is a draft only, I think the final route will be shorter. Those who want could also skip the city visit in the morning and join us on campus in the afternoon.

Only just seen this, finally I might be able to make a GTG! Im back at home by then but can hopefully make it up for the day.

Just as a possible addition to the draft route, Westgate Gardens is wonderful if its sunny weather. If I end up driving, I may be able to offer a lift from the Kingston (Upon Thames) area if it helps anyone out with trains etc (line straight to and from Waterloo).

Gloda, do you know if Kent students get free entry into the Cathederal? Once I did and once I didn't... (Though my student card technically runs out on the 6th ;D)

It'll be great to see some of you hopefully!

Mike, we'll meet at 9am, and kick off at 9.30.
Anders, University of Kent students (and also Christchurch I should think) get free entry. I don't think you should worry about the date on the card, a friend of mine got in for free with the card from her Bruxelles university. Westgate Gardens sounds like a plan.

Will have to give this one a miss, just too far and too long on the train , even if I get the first train still be too late.

My geography isn't what it should be, how far is it, or how would I get there from Hethrow? Is train service the right idea?

wehrmacher, from Heathrow your best option would probably be the train to London, then get a train to Canterbury (via Ashford I think).
I have revised the route, it is a bit shorter now but includes more places the average tourist won't see.
Google Map Route V2.

MikeOwens, you could easily catch up with us anywhere along the route, as you can see it's quite circular and we'll never be that far from the Canterbury West station.
