My submission, Dune, did better than I had anticipated, although once I got the finished result last week, I started to get pretty excited. I thought it came out well.

Anyway, there were several really good comments made, and I put together a page, here, that addresses some of them, and explains my reasoning. It also contains a couple outtakes.

And the various commenters were right: it was too dark. Unfortunately, I did it on my laptop while on vacation. Turns out that making it look good on the LCD made it overall too dark. Live and learn!

You were one of my 10's this week and my pic to win. That was a great shot and I was completely envious you have such a great subject matter to shoot.

I saw your other versions and you did right by submitting the one you did.:-)

Welcher: I gave you a 10. I thought it was perfect for B&W. When doing B&W, shadows, texture, and mood should all be considered. This was definately one of my favorites!

What I have learned:
As far as my submission, Chive Flower, I am dissappointed that I over sharpened. It was definately an over-compensation. When I went back and REALLY looked at the original, it was a bit out of focus afterall. I had taken this section and cropped it out of the whole. I was so excited by how the striations in the petals popped out, and how the texture "felt" in the flower, that I lost sight of other aspects of the photo. The background though, was supposed to be out of focus (DOF). I think next year (now that the flowers have passed), I will try to redo the shot against a black background, or a white one. I'll play with it. Anyway. The thing that caught me about it was the texture - even before shooting - and how the sunlight only lit one side. Thanks everyone for your comments. It shows me that if I had paid attention to other aspects of the photo more, or reshot it, I could've had a good rating.
