i like them technically, like the lighting and the b&w conversion. i have noticed, and i wonder why it is, that everyone seems to want to do portraits of themselves or someone else screaming. it seems kinda funny. thats just my tangent, not a statement on the shots

Is there a difference between a portrait and a picture? I see a picture, I certainly dont see a portrait. At least not my idea of a portrait. They seem dark and almost disturbed to me.

I think wikipedia sums up what a portrait is pretty well:
A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person.

I was going for a moody look with a lot of emotion.

There's a lot of frustration and discontent out there but most people don't walk around screaming. A portrait like that can be a way of expressing those emotions that are going on inside which can't normally be expressed in day to day life.

More than anything though, my bathroom has a 250 watt heat lamp on the ceiling and I've noticed it makes very dramatic lighting. I have been meaning try and shoot a dramatic picture with it and this is the result. So to me, the lighting dictated the pose.

I tried adding some toning to Portrait 1.

I'm still figuring out this B&W stuff.

Not too bad - I always like high contrast and rough light though. ;)

I left you a comment on each.

If you're just working with gray scale and playing with lighting then these are really for technique excercise.

They don't really say anything in terms of the actual shot. They really don't make a statement. They remind me of images taken of Carney workers ("Circus Oddities") taken in the 1970's, but these seem to be taken out of context with no point to them.
