Sorry. I just reread the rules you so kindly linked to. Nowhere does it say you "must" comment on lower votes cast.

However it does say you "must": (quote from rules)"rate entries on a scale of 1 to 10. A score of 1 is a “bad” photo, and a score of 10 is a “good” photo."

The scale is 1-10, not 5-10.

You’re right it doesn't say that you have to comment on lower votes but we all should. And again if you want to get all technical you can. I know the score isn't 5-10 BUT, like you said a 1 means BAD not oh I don't like this picture because it's better than mine.

10 is perfect 5 is AVERAGE 1 means you shouldn’t have even enter the challenge. Am I right?

This is going to be a few high scoring and then a lot of low scores type challenge.
I also have to say that I wish people were a bit more original with their work. I've been seeing too many shots that were past ribbon winners twisted to fit the current theme.

Typical as of late for me. At least it's above my running average. :-)

True. However, as I made a point of in this thread, a mediocre score on DPC is WAY better than the average snapshot and is not something to be embarrassed about. I give a 3 to stuff that looks like the average snapshot, and I always explain why I leave it.

I can see from your own profile that you have high standards and turn in some good scores. You judge others entries against a tough set of standards which you seem capable of meeting yourself. This certainly is NOT a case of the pot calling the kettle black. All I ask is that, in the spirit of what this site is about, that you leave others some feedback when you leave those low votes, so they can improve.

I apologize for detouring this thread again. We now return you to our regularly scheduled rants about trolls. :-}

Steve,

You are very right. And the lack of comments on my part is something that I'm not happy about. I will try to make an effort to comment on most of the shots in this challenge. But sometimes its just hard to make yourself comment on shots where it seems obvious that the shooter didn't care themselves about how the shot came out.

The most frustrating part is the eye candies (or some funnier photos) wins the challenges, and others get (most of the time) crappy votes.

There is no fix. Even if "DPC institute" drops "How to vote" books from sky (not heavy ones... no one wants to get sued) this issue will not be fixed.

I am not going to start any other conversation, old ones buried under a thick mud... but I must mention here, we might, only "might" need a challenge voted by judges only!

I am not talking about this anymore, I had to say something, because the complaint here, very very common one :D

*Regarding Dirt_Diver's post below*

LEO!!!

I want to bring that subject up again at some point. Way back when I suggested a system of bracketed competitions. For instance, say there are 3 levels of competition- bronze, silver, and gold. To enter a bronze comp you must have an average score of above 4.0 To enter a silver, above 5.0, and to enter a gold, above 6.0. Similarly, you must also have above those scores to vote in the competitions. (These would be on top of the regular competitions with no entrance req). I think that this would be a really cool experiment for DPC to run, just to see how voting is changed.

If you like the idea, make it known. :)

Jason, there are some shooters who really are trying but just can't quite get it right - I don't think they didn't care how the shot came out, but are really trying. If you were to go into commenting with that in mind, you might just make a huge difference to someone. You obviously have the talent to realize your shots - try to maybe help others see what they need to try on the next shot.

Jason - I guess we all see things differently at different ages and stages, but I would never assume when I look at a picture in a challenge that 'the shooter didn't care themselves how the shot came out' - my assumption would be that they have entered the challenge with the very real hope of at least doing 'ok' by their standards or maybe getting a PB.

Your ability might well be greater than some others here, but if it is, maybe you should try to show a little graciousness towards them, and accept that everyone has a different measure of talent.

In the same way that you might like to receive some positive comments or tips from 'big' names on this site - maybe your comments or tips could help others ?

Now please - can we get back to the scores and cheap trash talk ?

:- )

Sure Jedusi,

But who says that trash talk has to be cheap?

For instance- "You couldn't take a good picture if you had a 1dsmkIII!!!"

And that is an example of expensive trash talk :-p

Wow, practically every thread that I've entered lately in the forums has had a lot insults being thrown around!

Peeps, these are VIRTUAL RIBBONS!!!!!!!!! For pity's sake!!!

To those who feel their "superiority" in judging others' shots and feel it "beneath" them to even have to look at them...don't look!

To those who are out there, earnestly trying as I am...give those with a superiority complex the raspberries and pass them right by. I'm learning to let this place roll off my back now. It's not worth it!

By the way, sitting at a 5.01.... one comment and seeing my score drop like a lead brick over the afternoon wasn't making me feel good to begin with, but coming in here to see the "gripes" aren't helping either.

Think I'll just stick to seeing my score at the end of the week and stay out of certain threads for now. I'll stay sane longer that way. *smile*

Thread"S"... more than one.

But, they all got swept under rugs.

Here is what "I" decided to do. I can't change this site, it's not mine, I surely can care only within small limits, no more. I am going to enter as much as "eye candy" shots so I hopefully can win some ribbons to put my resume. I also am entering local club contests, which I am also winning with different judgments... and I am starting my own website, which also will have a different voting system.

There might be some changes in DPC in the future... how far future, that's unknown :)

I'm sure that there will be changes in DPC eventually! I think new comers are going to make enough of a "wave" to see that change happening at some point or another.

NOW, I'm going to keep my head on! *grin*

I'm sure that it does.....but, some people are getting "cut throat" about it and that isn't a great feeling! I actually feel sorry for the shots that I leave behind me when I do get a higher score (rare) but, it still means that others who have put in a lot of thought and work into their shots. I try never to forget that! And, there's always several with lower scores that likely should have done better than mine, but "tastes" were simply not there for them. I NEVER "scoff" at others' shots being beneath mine because there's thought and work that have gone into those shots and heaven knows, I've been beneath others many more times than I care to think about and know what it feels like to be there, including the Brown!

Jamie, I was joking. :P

Besides, we all know that chance as a bit to do with winning anyway. It all depends on the mood of the Voters. (and how many trolls are patrolling out)

I never think im better than anyone...except for Judi....She stinks, Ive told her several times to take a shower and she dont listen to me...will someone please talk to that gal.

That won't happen because when you complain outside of a thread that isn't a rant created by the one pitching the fit it gets removed by SC.

This site is still in the 90's and with all the polls saying the same thing "stay the same" it will never change.

With that said... I do love this site for many reasons but I also hate it because the way it's being ran. I think (and this is my opinion not anything more) SC should be replaced at least every 3 or 4 years. I think that some rules should be edited to clear some things up and I think even though SC is doing their best at trying to stop cheating they have too much on their plate with all they do. Maybe some things should be tasked out to others... Let SC to validating and thread patrol while others watch voting and take advise from it's members.

I've said it before and I say it again there are other Digital photography sites out there and it won't be long before they are ahead of the game or better than DPC.

We need something made public about updates for the site. Plans and maybe a committee that could keep people up to date. Maybe a monthly meeting of board members that have more pull over SC. Think of it like auditors for the auditors. There are many things with in this site that could make it better and remove some of the anger and hostility but no one is ever taken seriously unless a survey is taken and the majority wins.

IMO those that say “ I like the site the way it is” should really be saying “I don’t care what you do with the site as long as I can enter challenges” IME it’s the exact same thing.

I’ll guess 20 minutes before this post is removed by SC… If you read it before they remove it, I hope it means something to you.

[remainder of rant removed by SC for irony and brevity of quoting]

This is OFF TOPIC. You've already been warned about polluting unrelated threads with your obvious agenda. Again, we all know how you feel. I've addressed your concerns in an email to you. Please refrain from posting off-topic. This is a scores thread. Keep it that way.

Ohhh, I dunno. There are some really good images in there that truly capture the spirit of the named game better than mine. But I surely cannot complain at all. But then again...... you never know! I did get one of those yellows with an incredibly low score that I don't even think worthy of a top ten. Just luck.

I am obviously excited about this score! I'm hoping for it to push a little higher (everyone hopes for this, right?) I just think that THIS time, I really submitted something that not only pertains to the named challenge, but it is also something different and unique...a little "outside the box."
