Just a note. I got one of the second options there for a friend and it didn't work. I haven't actually spent the time to figure out why, but I did do a little bit of closer looking and could not get the wireless transmitter to communicate with the receiver under any combination of channels. I'll have to look a bit closer later. I tried with three separate 500 DG super units and another flash that I have. The transmitter was alternately on a 300D and a 30D, and was fired manually with the contacts.
Buy from a brick and mortar store if possible.
Additionally, the flash will become manual if you use it like that. Using RF signals is not compatible with E-TTL with Canon stuff. The 580's and Sigma 500 supers use IR and do allow E-TTL communication off-body.
Google turned up this one.
Note that using manual settings for your flash and/or body, either on-camera or off-camera generally defeats pre-flashes (which often confuse optical slave units badly). Consult your manual for more details.
I like to use cheaper flashes off-body with such systems. Optical slaves are pretty useful in some situations where IR doesn't work well due to line-of-sight issues since optical slaves detect sudden changes in light. |

How would the device in the first ebay link work?
Connect that to the speedlight and then how is it triggered? By the incamera flash?
The ST-E2 sounds like the proper tool for the job but it's just too expensive i think, could only find it for around £120 on Amazon.
*Edit* On a side note; will the Canon Remote Controller RC-1 work with a 30D?

not sure what too expensive is. The ST-E2, the proprietary wireless (IR) system from canon costs you £80.
The cheapo wireless systems on the ebay costs even less (like £20 for a emitter and receiver).
a wire and an adapter must cost even less.

Can anybody suggest a nice, hopefully cheap way to get my 580EX off-camera to my 30D?
I'd ideally like it wireless, but guessing that's going to be much more expensive.
Any and all solutions welcome however....
