Have you heard about the Earth Hour 08 movement yet?!? At 8 p.m., Saturday, March 29, all across the world, communities, cities, companies, landmarks, and individuals like you and me will be turning their lights out for one hour. A collective call to action on the challenges of climate change. This is a big event!

You can learn more about it at the Earth Hour Home Page at //www.earthhourus.org/ or I would be most honored if you were to sign up (simply commit to "lights out" for one hour at Earth Hour -- no donations or costs to you -- just join in the event!) at my personal Earth Hour web page at: //earthhour.org/user/W3VJ They will then keep you informed on the event's progress over the next three weeks, with news, updates, and suggested activities.

This seems like a great chance for an Earth Hour Speed Challenge! Take a photo between 8-9 p.m. (in your time zone) on Saturday, March 29 that reflects the concept of Earth Hour and what it means to you (or however the DPC gurus should choose to define it), using only ambient light, or candlelight, match light, time exposure, (last quarter moon), or however you happen to approach the subject, but without the use of standard studio or house AC/DC electricity... "lights out." (And, yes, of course there are going to be bright lights blaring in some places that don't participate, so there may very well be light sources in your photo, right?) But... why not join in, and try to capture (um, focus on...) the spirit of Earth Hour 08?!

I see lots of possibilities here. Work with the Earth Hour folks to supply follow-up photos from Earth Hour around the world (a selection of their choosing, possibly?)...for their website? Or devote a special online gallery to Earth Hour 08. Or publish a book, for that matter. Photos for next year's site / event / PR? Exposure (Man, I can't avoid these unintended puns tonight... so sorry!) um, yes, worldwide EXPOSURE for DPC?

DPC could make such a powerful, creative statement as a part of this event... about climate change, going green... and working together to save the environment. It's a chance for you DPCers to turn on your cameras, turn out your lights, and ...shine brilliantly!

I hope to see some enthusiastic feedback and genuinely green excitement about this! Thanks so much!! Peace & Light.

TWO DAYS LATER (edit): Or not. Whatever. No responses?
FOUR DAYS LATER (edit): Whoa! Slow down! The responses to this brilliant idea are just absolutely underwhelming!! Maybe I'm to gather that this site is truly dedicated to its digital photography contest mission... and not prone to zooming off on tangental issues such as the environment, politics, etc., (although I've noticed that religion and/or lack and disbelief thereof is a rather hot topic for random rants.)

Anyway... really... whether as a challenge subject or not: Earth Hour 08 -- March 29 at 8 p.m. -- check it out! I still think it's a pretty cool idea. And I'm actually, in my own twisted way, truly enjoying my own private thread. It's kind of nice not having to bother to respond to any responses. So... keep those cards and letters not coming! And thanks for the cyberspace. Peace & Light & Whatever Twirls Your Twinkie -- Old Coyote

I'd like to see something like this too, anything to raise awareness for Earth Hour, and environmentalism in general.

Hey, thanks, y'all, for noticing this and for your interest in it! Still ten days to Earth Hour and counting. Yes, I do think it could be a fun challenge... AND help to raise the awareness of Earth Hour. Thanks much for responding!! I hope we can do something with this. (Speed Challenge? Surprise us!!?) -- Peace, Love & Good Light!

Cool idea! Earth hour is almost here! Anyone else up for this as a challenge? Not only photographically but as a way to do a little to help reduce those greenhouse emissions.

We're having Earth Hour in Burlington, Ontario (pop 151,000). I'm not sure about Toronto.

I'm going to be hunkered down in the basement, hugging my rifle.

I'm sure you'll be hugging that squirrel as well, probably while ranting about how you don't need no ketchup.

Nah, he's just worried that those others have made it across the chasm, and found him, anyway.

I'd be afraid, too.

Would a photo of freshly purchased carbon credits be acceptable in the speed challenge? I might be in Canada in a giant squirrel costume having some fun with one of the locals. Barring that, it sounds like a good idea for a challenge (both DPC and Earth Hour) and a good excuse to break out the torches.

I'm turning on every light in the house. You'll have to nuke me from orbit ... only way to be sure. :)

The whole "earth hour" is charmingly naive!

I have a fantastic idea for a photo- if only I could remember to
take it during the specified time!!! : )

We will be turning off all the lights and I think the challenge is a great idea. We are going to be in the middle of moving house though so I will have to make sure I don't pack my camera!

I suppose different time zones turn out the lights at 8pm our time, regardless of their own time?
03/29/2008 06:03:40 PM · #20
BAH! Stupid rain. Won't be going out in this weather; otherwise, I was going to the Jackson St bridge for some Atlanta skyline shots.

We did it at our house, but had such fun kept it going for 3 hours - SMILED!

Hey, Burlington, Ontario; and our neighbor, Oakville; are competing to see who can cut own the most. Pretty cool that Toronto is doing it too, so I'll bet the entire Golden Horseshoe is participating if Toronto is.

Be sure to power down your alarm system as well. And don't freak out if you hear strange noises - it's the wind.
