D. M. Gremlin Productions is very proud to present the first in a series of photography workshops with glamour/fetish/fantasy photographer Adam Chilson.

The workshop will be an all day event on Saturday, March 29th that covers the basics of Adam's meticulous lighting techniques. Application of these techniques is what allows him to create his reality-suspending images without the use of digital effects or post-production.

For some examples of images shot here at an informal workshop with Adam during the last studio Open House event, visit this thread: //www.dm-gremlin.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=207

The instructional portion of the formal workshop will include demonstrations of lighting applicable to glamour, portrait, and artistic photography. The second half of the day will include shooting opportunities for participating photographers with the model on set. Photographers will receive a promotional model release for portfolio use of images shot at this event.

Registration for this workshop is limited to 8 photographers. Workshop fee of $150 must be paid in advance. For complete details and registration information, please visit the workshop web site at //www.starkravenmusic.com/workshop.html.

For inquiries, information, or registration, please contact the studio at studio@dm-gremlin.com, or call 866-334-4364.

With all due respect, Andrew, in my opinion, the photographer's dramatic photos are more a result of the props and costumes, than of lighting. Of course, the lighting he sets up is spot on, but doesn't appear to be overly complicated. It seems like it would be more of an intricate process of getting his props, apparel, and composition right, than of lighting.

Just my $0.02 worth. I hope he has a successful turnout.

With all due respect, what can you tell me exactly about his lighting that doesn't seem overly complicated? You assume put a light here put a light there?

I really do find your comment disrespectful and unwarranted. Because in the same breathe you say the lighting is Spot On, but also diss it.

How many people can preform spot on lighting even half as well as this presenter?

Thanks for your change but feel free to keep it.

(p.s. in no way im I associated with the event, I am just trying to help promote because I think its worth it for anyone wanting to learn more about lighting [which I have been told is key to great photography])

Well, first of all let me say that there was no disrespect intended. I respect, admire, and support any photographer going out and making a living. I was only offering up my opinion.

I fully understand that lighting (especially studio lighting) in and of itself is not trivial, and yes, it is key to good photography.

Having said that, some lighting is less complicated than others. Less (or not "overly") complicated does not always mean easy. I was merely making the observation that, in my mind, the props and costumes stood out more than the lighting itself in the photos displayed on the promotional web page. :-(

Adam is not only an amazing photographer, but a clear communicator and an enthusiastic instructor. He really enjoys seeing the "light come on" for other artists when new information begins to "click" for them.

While many of his photographs DO in fact utilize complex lighting schemes, this is because it is as needed to create the level of detail. depth, dimension, and color that he conceives in his images. However every light used is placed and directed according to the basic principles of light's inherent behavior. This is the information Adam will be breaking down and presenting in his workshops.

This first workshop is going to start very basic. We are already planning workshop #2, which will be on a more advanced theme of lighting metal and industrial sets.

The inaugural workshop on March 29th is almost full. We currently have ONE spot left open.

Participants will be adding some very high-end images to their portfolios - and a promotional model release is included in the workshop fee. So whether it is lighting knowledge, a boost to the portfolio, or both, that is of interest, this workshop is an amazing opportunity.

For registration information, please email studio@dm-gremlin.com, call 866-334-4364, or find this same contact information in the workshop web site at //www.starkravenmusic.com/workshop.html.

Workshop Content and Itineraries:

Please make sure to review "What to Bring" for any workshop.

"Industrial Lighting Magic" April 19th, 2008 - 10am - 7pm will be an intermediate to advanced workshop focusing on the theme of crafting and lighting metal-based industrial sets. Adam will be bringing to the workshop a number of metal components specifically featured in his portfolio images. Participants will gain insight into the physical components involved in creating sets in this style, as well as learning principles of effective photographic lighting for the industrial/metal set.

Topics will include:

**The basics of lighting metal: Utilizing inherent reflective qualities, avoiding pitfalls, and minimizing hot spots.
**Capturing the textures of metal: Including diamond plate, flat steel, chains, expanded steel, and perforated metal.
**The "mood" of metal: From bright and shining to rust and grunge, and use of gels to color metal.
**Crafting metal sets: The use of metal components both as backgrounds and as means of generating shadows.

During this workshop, Adam will direct the assembly of a set utilizing these elements. He will give step-by-step demonstrations of lighting the set for the various mentioned effects.

From there, the workshop will progress into advanced lighting techniques involving integrating a model into the set as part of an industrial scene. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned by shooting on set with the featured model (model TBA).

Participants will receive a promotional model release for non-commercial portfolio use of images shot during the workshop.

Outline of Workshop Schedule:

10am-11am: Arrival of attendees; meet & greet between attendees, instructor, and model
11am-2pm: Lighting demonstrations/discussions involving various metal set elements
2pm-3pm: Lunch (provided for participants)
3pm-6:30pm: Assembly of metal/industrial set and shooting opportunities for participants
6:30pm-7pm: Equipment pack-up, final discussion, and signing of promotional model releases

What to Bring:

Digital Camera with hot shoe or x-sync port
important! The lighting techniques demonstrated in this workshop will center around the use of strobe lighting. Each participant must ensure that his/her camera has a hot shoe or x-sync port in order to trigger the flashes during individual shooting opportunities.

Film Photography:
Feel free to bring a film camera, but there will not be time for individual light metering. Attendees who wish to shoot on film still must bring an x-sync-capable digital camera for use as a "polaroid" or test shot in order to calculate/compensate for film exposure.

Pocket Wizard wireless transceivers will be available for use at the event. The transmitters will be passed around to allow individual shooting opportunities. Any attendee who has his/her own Pocket Wizard transceiver may feel free to bring it. Shooting time, however, will still be equally divided between the participants. For any camera that has an x-sync port but not a hot shoe, please contact the studio for information on the proper type of sync cable and adaptor to bring to the event.

Camera Accessories:
Each participant must provide his/her own digital capture cards, film, charged batteries, and any other accessories necessary to the function of his/her own cameras.
