Most of us use Pshop to edit. have a look under the rules section on how much editing is allowed for the challenges. Have fun

Hiya! Welcome to the madness! In the section marked Help in the upper left there is a FAQ list that will likely answer most of your questions if not, the Site Rules in the same section may be able to answer the rest.

Hi and welcome to DP! IF you're just putting your shots in your portfolio, then you can do ANYTHING you want to them. I would recommend re-sizing and saving for the web to save some space, it fills up fast. I try to keep mine under 250k each, I usually shoot for 150k though. Now the challenges are a WHOLE different story. RAW conversion is gennerally accepted in all contests unless it says otherwise. There are many different rule sets for the competitions, you need to check which rules they are using for any given competition before doing any editing. Here is where you can view all the different rule sets they have. Most challenges allow the basic levels, contrast, sharpness etc. ALOT of them don't seem to allow any major changes to the picture, it can get confusing so it is better to read the rules before entering a contest! Good Luck!

Have a look at this link. On the left you'll see the different rule sets. You'll be asked to follow one rule set for each challenge. The only one that you're not allowed to use Photoshop is "Minimal Editing." Your photos must always be submitted as JPEGs.

Advanced Rule Set and others

Another link to have a look at is mk's unofficial self-authorized faq. It's a great summary of what goes on here.

Just so you know, there's no 12 step program for DPC addiction.

Hi and welcome to DPC. I've only been a member for about six months and I feel I have way gotten my $$$ worth for what i have learned. Everyones told you about the roles...they arent' that confusing once you've entered a few of the challenges and read the comments people have left. Look at lots of pictures and the comments they have received. You can click on the users name and see even more pictures that photographer has done and see lots of interesting information about the photographer. You'll also see a button where you can see their portfolio and see things that weren't in a challenge....which is good to see since they probably didn't follow the site roles and you can learn even more interesting things.

An area where there seems to be a weakness at DPC is in people leaving feedback/comments about the photo you are viewing. Please try to do that as often as you can.....the idea is that is how we learn to be a better photography and see how other photographers see our work. I would love it if you did that to some of mine in my portfolio....just click on my name and it will take you right to my profile....from there you click on "view this photographer's portfolio". Again, welcome.

The basic idea of the rules is to make sure it stays a photography contest. There's a fuzzy line between photography and digital art these day, but there are other contest sites for the more manipulative type of stuff.

Welcome aboard. Put on your thickest skin and jump in!
