I can see why you mourn it's passing! I remember getting one of the follow-ons to the SX-70 for a birthday one year. I never used it a lot because of the price of the film packs. It was far more economical to shoot b/w film and develop it in my basement darkroom.
I know that Polaroid has been just a figurehead corporation for some time now, licensing it's well known name to anybody willing to pay. Who's really been doing the instant film?

| I was amazed to see someone actually using a Polaroid camera just a few weeks ago at the zoo. I'd probably be less surprised to see a pterosaur flying overhead. |

It was on the news last week about this. I suppose some fine artist types use polaroid, and Reese Witherspoon is upset over it too, as it's a hobby thing for her, apparently she grew up with a Polaroid using mother. She says the hollywood makeup people use them for continuity - quick and easy.
The owner/head of the current polaroid bought it a few years back and that's when the name started going onto anything. He says it's his way of keeping the grand old brand / name alive. So then he kills off the one thing the brand stood for. Go figure.

It will be sadly missed.
Here is my SX-70 How-to from over at Jpeg magazine.
Of course, immediatly after I wrote that, I found out they were dicontinuing everything! Very Dissapointing!

You can't buy Cool-Ray® sunglasses anymore? They are the one product which uses a polarizing process, unlike the instant film. |
