I just got a sigma 10-20mm and it's soft on the left side from f4 up to f11 or f13. How is it possible to be soft on only one side? WTF

This is the lens i was going to buy in a few weeks.

I've been researching this and now discover this is a known issue. Going to be hell for me to get it allllllll the way back to the U.S. to rectify it. This speaks for nothing but piss poor quality control, because its clearly not an after effect. Let me just take a long deep breath and prepare for the sigma experience, we'll see what happens.

I dealt with Sigma UK direct once and they were wonderful
Good luck with it

I've had a good run with sigma for a while, cant complain about the past sigma lens. But I'm usually thorough wen it come's to researching lens. The lens had a lot of positive reviews, I guess this one slipped me :(

Hopefully i have the same luck MAK did.

Think yourself lucky.

I've had two copies of this lens and they were soft on both sides as well as the top, bottom and centre.

Just bad luck man, I just had a canon L lens that is only two months old and the USM motor went bad. All the reviews I red on amazon and every other site had nothing but positive reviews. Someone is bound to get a bad copy now and then.

I've had several Sigma lens and not had any trouble with them (knock on wood). I did pick up a used Sigma lens on eBay that needed to be rechipped and I have to say that Sigma service was exceptional. Prompt, polite...I buy their product with confidence now after that.

check out this linky.Click on the blur index under the pic of the lens. youcan play around with the fstops and focal length. If you go to the home page youcan see all the makes they have tested and how they performed for the pros.

Is the pink supposed to indicate the soft areas? Because its everywhere LOL :)

My Canon 24-70 started doing this about a month ago, more noticeably on the wide end at any aperture. Very frustrating on a group shot when the people on the right are tack sharp but on the left are soft. So I took it to the Canon repair center and they fixed it and said there was a loose part inside the chassis. Not sure how that happened, weird. Good luck with yours.

I hate it.

No actually it is the sharp areas. If you notice on the right side of the index there is a colour scale. the lower the colour on the scale the sharper the lens. If youstart getting into blue then its getting soft.

Oh bummer. :-( Sorry to hear your bad luck. I have that lends and it is equally sharp throughout, at least as far as my old eyes can tell. Heopefully you can get your money back, or get it replaced with one that isn't defective. Good luck.

Was inspired by some of your photos among others to go for this lens. Like I said though, I really have'nt had any problems with sigma lens before and I love the other two I own, so we'll see.

I really enjoy this lens... here are some sample shots.

I got the lens exchanged, but not from sigma.
Now i have to test it again, whats the best way to look for the soft spots?

bump

Sorry to hear that. It might be very annoying.

IMHO, avoid Sigma!

It's not overpriced. What did you pay for the Sigma? Did you pay around US$500 for something that doesn't work? :-) The Canon 10-22 is around US$680 and you know it'll work. That justifies the price, right there.

In my opinion, those that buy on Amazon are mostly hobbiests and amateurs (I could be wrong). They wouldn't know a soft-sided lens from a hole in the ground. Besides, I've sent bad reviews to other sites before and received a "your submission will be reviewed before it appears on our site", only to never ever see it appear. It the ole addage, "you can't believe everything you read on the internet."

Go ahead and get the Canon 10-22, you won't be sorry!
