Updated: We are doing a weekly side challenge where we are going to pick a certain topic ie: a soda ad, movie poster, book cover etc. and try and re create it. When we seem to have run out of ideas we can go on to specific photographers or pick a country and choose a photographer from there etc. I hope whoever decides to join has tons of ideas to bring to the table! I'm not a stickler to deadlines so basically the way I see this going is we will pick a topic each week and we will all do our best to get them done! Although, it could pile up if we don't keep up! Anyway, I see this going on as long as there is an interest. If you're interested just let me know!

So far we have:

ApertureAshley
LMA128
TCGuru
icu1965
ZeppKash

************************************************************************************************************************************

Hey everybody!! I've been thinking about starting a side challenge and want to see if there will even be anybody interested in it. Basically, I want to do an ongoing side challenge where we pick a famous or well known image and try to duplicate it. I think this is a wonderful way to learn new techniques and certainly face new challenges. It can be anywhere from movie posters/dvd covers/album covers to famous photographs. I guess we could do some shots from DP with the owners consent, I just think it would be fun to try and re-create famous or well known images. Everyone would pick their own image, I don't think we should limit ourselves to all of us trying to do the same photo, could get a little difficult for some people! If anyone is interested just let me know!

we've had real challenges like this one too.

i think maybe since there already was a challenge like this, that maybe it would be more of a challenge if a person chose one photo a week and everyone has to try to imitate it or remake it into their style, but still keeping the overall idea of the photo the same.(?)

Yeah, I thought about that and the problem I see with it is that for any given picture we use, some people may find it nearly impossible to re-create it, like if they don't live near a beach or don't own an object thats in the photo

I honestly like the idea you mentioned better, I was just trying to simplify it so that lots of people could participate. The photo I REALLY want to re-create is the pulp fiction poster with uma thurman on it. Here is a pic of that poster.

I was basically just wanting to put up a thread where people could do shots they wanted at their own pace, something that would just kinda be around, ya know?!

ya. i see what you mean and how it would be difficult to recreate a beach scene or something. well maybe then it could be a side challenge that one week you say like do Soda Ad and you re-make it, or another week you do a movie poster (like you had it mind), etc.

Yeah, that sounds great!! When we start getting sparse on ideas then we can start choosing certain famous photographers or countries and we pick a photographer from that country or something like that!! I think that sounds great b/c it gives some structure but we can still pretty much choose what we do. I'm in! Who else??

I wouldn't mind giving this a shot. Do we all have to do the same topic?

Yeah, we were going to try and have everyone atleast do the same topic, but you get to choose the photo that you want to re-do. If there is something in particular you are wanting to do then just let me know what the toic would be and we will add it to the list of topics!

Sorry I didn't mean that to come out bratty. I just wondered if we were all doing the same thing. I don't really have a good suggestion right now. I like your idea of the Pulp Fiction movie cover. There are quite a few pulp fiction novels that would be fun to do.
pulp fiction
There are quite a few ideas there, if anyone's interested in looking at them.

Reading this i'm not sure exactly what your plan is here. :) If you want to pick a single movie/book/album cover and we ALL try to replicate it, I would LOVE to join. I think this is a fabulous idea, and your Pulp Fiction cover would be perfect to start.

LOL, I didn't think you sounded bratty!! I think those covers look like fun to do, I want to do 'Naked on Roller Skates'! ;) This can definetly be one of our 'topics'!

I did originally want everyone to do the same photos, I think it would be so neat to see all different versions of the same thing. But the more I thought about it the more I worried that some people may have problems with certain projects. Like, say there was a beach in the photo, I know I'm not near any beaches :), or certain objects in the photos which may be un attainable for certain people, and if a shot requires the use of a studio. Someone suggested we just do broader 'themes' instead, like movie/book covers, soda/jean ads, famous photographers etc. This way there is some structure but allows the freedom for everyone to choose photos that they can re-do within their means. I am not a stickler for deadlines or everyone doing the same thing(like if someone wants to do something totally different than everyone else, then that is fine with me :) ) so if anyone has a fun idea that is totally unrelatable to what we are doing, PLEASE go ahead and do it! I just felt like we needed a little more flexibility so everyone has a chance to get great shots! I am totally open to suggestion on the way this should be organized and I hope you join! (we definetly need more people so we can get started!)

Also, maybe some weeks we could suggest specific posters/photos and let everyone vote or something on whether or not they can all do it, this way sometimes we can all be doing the same photos!

Yeah, the beach shots in Michigan wouldn't be too fun right now either. But something like the pulp fiction cover, everbody could do that. some people might not have the gun to lay in front of her, but i think thats where creativity comes in. Lets see what we can all do with what we have. Obviously some people have more lighting to get great studio shots, but then we can see those great shots and ask how they did it compared to how we did.

I really love this idea. Unfortunately, I probably won't have time to actually do anything, but I'll keep an eye on this thread and see what comes along. Maybe I'll get inspired. :)

Yeah, I guess until we run out of ideas we could use ones we know anybody wuold be able to pull off. When it starts getting tricky, then we can start with the broader themes. SO, is everyone agreed to do the pulp fiction cover first?

I'm in.

What did you plan on for time frame?
Are we going to post our photos here as we complete them, or will there be an 'unveiling' date?

Pulp Fiction cover is fine with me! :)

Well, I was thinking we could do one a week, but now I'm thinking we should do them every two weeks, a week is cutting it a little too close for me

LOL, I like the idea of an 'unveiling', so how about March 18th being the deadline for the pulp fiction poster? Like I said before though, I'm not going to scorn anybody who may take longer (b/c it may be me!)
