I checked my Yahoo mail today and there was an email from staff@yahoo.com that said there were a lot of emails coming from my account with viruses and they suspected i had a virus. They included a zip file and said i should run it.

I was suspicious so I got the help of a few friends and one was able to confirm that it probably is a virus. It appears to be a varient of the W32/Bagel worm. //www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32baglek.html

Luckily I didn't open it.

If you get it, don't open it!!!

If you get a suspicious e-mail like that, send it to spoof@yahoo.com (for ones involving Yahoo). This lets them know what is out there and gives them better ammo to fight them.

Ebay and PayPal also have spoof addresses for similar emails using their names.

Lots of nasty people producing nasty stuff.

Be careful out there! We have had Bagel-K coming into our email gateways at work today and its a nasty bit of work...

I got an email from support@yahoo.com that said my account will be closed in 3 days because of improper use. If I want to keep it I would need to download their attachment, and fill out the form. Well the attachment is a .pif file, and I am fairly certain its a virus. Just be carefull opening attachments.

Me and a few friends have a site together called blizzardbeast.com, and yesterday all of us got an email from staff@blizzardbeast.com saying almost exactly the same thing as the email AFViper got. The thing is that there are only 4 email accounts on the domain, and none of them is staff@blizzardbeast.com.

It seems like the virus can be "sent" from any domain.

Actually, any email can be setup to look like it being sent from any address at any domain. There is absolutely no authentication or verification of what is put in the "From:" address. This one of the reasons why spam is so prevalent.

Somebody who is familiar with mail headers can look at such "spoofed" email and easily determine that it has been forged, and even have some idea of the path of machines it took before it was eventually delivered.

I had that happen with my landbountiful.com email address. It was from something like admin@landbountiful.com. It said that my email was going to expire soon and to run the program so my email wouldn't expire. The funny thing was is that I am pretty much the administrator of my site and I didn't send it to myself who is the only one with an email.

My wife got a couple of those in the last 2 days. Usually Norton picks these up. Luckily she was suspicious and didn't open the attachment.

All mail systems are being affected, Michigan State is having the same problem. Don't d/l the attachment and put in the password, and you'll be okay.
