Hey everyone,

I'm about to go on my first month long backpacking trip in Europe (1 month long) and was wondering what the best way to backup my pictures would be? Get one of those hard drives that allows you to back up CF cards, or, since I already have a 80gb 2.5" USB external drive, get myself a cheap Eee PC and back up with that?

Normally, I'd just bring the drive, but last time I went to Europe, I noticed alot of those internet cafes didn't allow its customers to use the USB ports.

I'd rather not bring my Macbook Pro because I will be staying in Hostels and probably trains/airports during the whole month and I'd rather someone steal a 250$ Eee PC than a 2000$ laptop. (Which was the same reason why I got a 650$ Rebel XTI compared to a 40D)

Thanx,

Carlop.

I have a HD80 and love it... Just a hard-drive in a case with some firmware. You stick a card in & turn it on and it copies the content of the card to the HD. It can also act as a card reader & have a usb for connecting to computers. Runs off AA's & can also charge AA if you connect it to the juice. Hit google but there was another brand that was identical, just the HD80 was distributed in the US and the other you had to buy from Singapore.

Wow.. I just checked the prices for the HD80.. holy crap they're expensive! Its almost the same price as a Eee PC... maybe I'll wait a bit before I leave and the price for the eee will go down like most computers and I'll just get that.

Thanx

I use the Iomega Ego for trips. Then I just find a computer in an internet cafe and empty my memory cards to it each day or two.

I travel a lot, and my process for backing up the pictures is nice and basic, for the following reasons --

* Sometimes I don't want to take my laptop, for the same reasons you mentioned!
* A lot of net cafes won't allow me to plug my USB mp3/hard drive in (which I often use to store/back-up photos);
* I still fear losing the back-up I'm carrying with me, ie. theft.

So I simply fill up my memory cards, take it to a shop to burn to CD (or borrow a follow travellers computer to do it), make 2 copies, send one home and carry one with me. Then it's backed up at home while I travel!

Although I usually hate optical media (cause I always tend to scratch them), sending a copy home is a great idea!

Buying a bunch of memory cards doesn't really seem to be economically sound... Is it just me or has the price of flash media gone up these past few months? Around christmas I got a 4gb 133x SanDisk card for 40$ at futureshop, now, at an Online retailer (which is usually cheaper), the same card goes for like 80$. For 80$, I can get an 80gb external 2.5" hard drive.

I dunno what you are looking for but don't confuse the HD80 with the colorspace... The HD80 was like $140 + hard-drive when I got it a few years back... hardly expensive. Not sure from the site if they sell them now...sorry cannot think of the main distributer but was an identical product. I got a cheap 80Gb drive to put in it.

Memory is very cheap now but it would be a fair bit more then $200-ish to get 80Gb of cards (and no doubt you could buy a lot bigger drive now cheap then I did).

If you shoot JPG then enough memory cards is certainly an option... Hey I got a 4Gb card recently for $5 after rebate (if I get it), so you might get lucky :-)

Edit: The other place was eastgear.com and the product was PD70X but appears they don't sell them now. B&H has the HD80 for a markup price of $250 for one with an 80Gb drive installed.

Digital Foci Photo Safe on Amazon.com ranging from $120 to $160, depending on hard drive capacity.

I have this wolverine wolfpac 80 gig portable hard drive
. I got my on sale at fry's for around $130 dollars about a year ago. I would reccommend it. The drive has an internal battery that you charge in an outlet. It can download about 6-7 gigs in between charges, but if you have power in your room at night you can just plug it in and download. I have formatted it a few times and used it to download probably 300 gigs of photos including a ten day trip to Bali where I was dowloaded several gigs a day. It works as a hard drive and has USB, but you can't see the photo as it just has a little LCD screen and only has an on and Copy button. Every once in awhile it doesn't copy right, but I take out the card and it say zero images copied and put back in and it works. Even if you don't get this one I would find something like this, it is so nice to never run out of storage space! Even now when I am not traveling I take it with me every time I go shooting, I never have to delete images in the camera and check them when I get home. I have even dropped it a couple times but it still works great.

This looks good. Has anyone else had experience with this one or similar. Does anyone know an Australian retailer that sells these?

These all sound like great alternatives, but do they sell just the cases? Instead of paying 150$+ for one, I'd rather just buy the enclosure and use my own 80bg hard drive. At least I have a few months before I have to make a definitve decision.

I really don't understand how the eee PC will work for backup. They are only 8 GB devices (in their largest form) and of that, only about 5 GB available to the user. Backing up only 5 GB of photos seems a little slim to me. I took over 11 GB on my 1 week Alaska cruise.

The Eee PC would be used as a link between my camera/CF card and the 80gb 2.5" external I already have. At the same time, there is always the opportunity to review the pictures on a 7" screen, go on the internet with wifi, watch movies, blah blah... all for 250-300$....

I've found other gadgets that bridge the gap between CF cards and USB drives, but unfortunately, they do not provide enough power through the USB port to power up the portable hard drive; it only seems to work with the big hard drives you plug into the wall (which is not an option here).

Go on... buy the Eee, you know you want it. :)

Hahahahaha... I'm really trying to fight the urge.. which is why I started this thread to know if there was a better alternative.
Sending CDs/DVDs back home would definitly be much cheaper... If I can find an internet place that will let me burn them (I'm pretty sure easyinternetcafe didn't when I was in europe 2 years ago).
