OK, here is where we will post our shots so that we can give feedback and discuss the final poster layout. As far as I know the final poster will be 30"x40". The poster and the photos we shoot will need to be in landscape orientation, but it would be a good idea to have some portrait orientation shots as well, just in case ;) Using a standard 4x6 aspect ratio should be fine b/c we can resize as needed.

As of right now there is no deadline. We're only needing one shot here so let's make it the best possible one we can get! If anyone has any questions, the best way to get a quick answer from me is to PM me, but I will be checking our 2 threads daily.

Thanks again everyone for volunteering!!! If the skill of the photographers who have joined is any testimate to how this poster is going to turn out then I have no doubt it is going to be spectacular!!! Thanks again!!!

Here is a list of all participants and the photos they have taken so far or photos that they had already(This is not a "final" selection as far as the poster is concerned):

We only need 2 more states!! I really don't want this poster to be missing two states so if it get's down to it and some of us know people that live in these states that aren't part of DP who would be willing to take a shot for this poster then that will be acceptable. This would obviously be a last case scenario, but I really want to see this through!!!

Good luck everyone and have fun!!

Ashley

*************Our original deadline was **March 23rd**, and I would still like for anyone who can get some shots by then to try to do so, but in light of the fact that a lot of us are experiencing ugly weather, I think it would be a good idea for us to extend this into spring a little bit. Hope everyone is ok with this being a somewhat lengthy side-challenge, especially for just one shot!*****************

Actually that would be wonderful for me! New Mexico is all about the gorgeous skies (IMHO) and we just ain't gettin' 'em lately :-)

ok, so no one has posted an image in this thread yet. Let me be the first. Here are two that I took last monday on my drive through West Virginia. I have a couple more from a different place, but I entered one in to the Free Study for Feb so I will show that one later. This is basically the same picture in 2 different orientations. I know that it was said that we want it in landscape but I really like portrait for this location. Anyway, any comments would be appreciated, especially on how you would PP it differently.....or if they're just crappy photos that don't fit the theme of the State Challenge.

West Virginia is not as populated as other states. There are many mountains and open fields...definately "Country".

Like I said, I have others from a different spot, just can't post them yet....and plan on getting at least 2 more locations.

I am not sure what we are looking for in each state's photograph. I believe it is supposed to be something that screams the state's name when viewed or is a good representation of the state. Yes, No?

I really like these shots, I would like to see them in the spring/summer!

Yeah basically, the way I'm approaching mine is to take shots where people could almost guess which one it is (and if the don't guess it would atleast be in the region!) I really would just love to see beautiful shot of each of the states!

Do the shots have to be outdoors? Or would another trademark be appropriate such as cheese for WI.

Yes, I agree about seeing them in spring/summer as it would be much more dramatic. I plan on a few more photos, so this location might not even make the cut. Hopefully I can get some on a good day when it's much greener out.

I've been trying to figure out a way to make the photos fit the pattern of stars on the flag, but the way they are "nested" it's going to be hard to do without the photos starting to overlap each other, unless they are quite (too) small.

I wonder if it would work to use a pentagonal mask to crop them; they'd be close to a square or circular crop, but could be made much larger that way. Or we could use a star-shaped mask, which would look cool but eliminate most of whatever is not right in the center, though the stars could be made a lot larger than the actual ones on the flag without overlapping.

If we use the pattern for the layout, especially if we are listing the states in order of admission, I doubt that the portrait orientation would work.

Here is just one example of Northern Louisiana. Typical lake with Cypress trees and fog. If y'all think I need something else just let me know. I thought this one was pretty peaceful with the dock and bench.

I'd love to see it extend into late spring or summer as well. All of my good ideas for Idaho need to be shot when it's a little warmer!

I think everyone else is going to be doing mainly outdoor shots, but I do like the idea of the cheese! I think it would be great to do both!

Once I get my copy of illustrator I am going to mess around and see what I can come up with. Portrait orientatin may not work for that specific layout, but I think everyone should have some in portrait orientation just in case it is needed.

There are many things that I would like to include (or from which to choose when trying to symbolize Georgia in a single photo,) yet I am not sure that I will have time to go these places in the near future...Stone Mountain (near Atlanta,) The World of Coca Cola (downtown Atlanta,) Cloudland Canyon (very close to the Tennessee state line,) Tybee Island Lighthouse (I do have a photo of this that I will post on my profile, but I'm not sure that it's the best I can do,) Plains (Home of Former President Carter,) The Little White House/Warm Springs/Callaway Gardens (FDR,) Turner Field (Atlanta Braves,) Toccoa Falls, Agrirama (Living History Museum in Tifton,) Rocky Face (Dalton,) Lighthouse/Christ Church/Epworth-by-the-Sea...all on St. Simons Island.

I have used here one of the rustic-looking bridges over the Savannah River at Augusta since Georgia is often seen as a museum of yesteryear, even though Atlanta has become one of the newest trend-setters in the areas of fashion, technology, and political action (rivaling New York, LA, Chicago, Orlando & Miami.) On top of that Georgia is the largest state in geographical area east of the Mississippi River, and has a large range of scenic tourist destinations from the Great Smokie Mountains in the north to the Golden Isles/Cumberland/Sapelo and Sea Islands in the south. On top of all that we are known for the Okefenokee Swamp and forestry farming/logging areas.

Finally, let us not forget that Vidalia, Georgia (Home of the Sweetest Onions in the World,) is located about an hour to the southwest of me. :)

Well, I'm in the middle of a blizzard right now!! we're expected to egt up to 10"!!!! I may try to venture out and get some shots of the beautiful snowy landscapes, but then again it is pretty cold!!! How is everyone else doing as far as weather/getting out and getting some shots? I know the landscapes have been pretty drab with it being winter...

I had some decent contenders for Oregon, so I volunteered unless someone else claims it. Here are the two contenders. I like them both, someone else can choose, or it can be voted on.
Crater Lake
or
Cannon Beach

I kept them at 6x8", hope that works. Let me know if it doesn't I can change it.

I actually prefer the latter image.

Here's a starter photo for Arizona.

I fiddled around with the colors for a while and then decided to go BW. Not entirely happy with it, so there will be a few others to pick from.
