Thanks for the tip! Ordered the sample package and from what i read, I don't expect anything till fall.

I did theatre lighting in college & the gels I borrowed are worn down. Was looking to see if anyone on the web had a gobo sample pack. Some of them were great for casting shadows where you wanted them.

Nice examples, this type of post was what I was looking for. I knew you
could gell the backround but this shows the effect well. 80's maybe but I
still like those and Delorians too! ;) Thanks for the post!

Updated the dead link so people can still order! Anyone else have examples?

After reading this thread I went to the Rosco web site and clicked on the "Where to Buy" link. Turns out there was a theatrical supply house just a few blocks from my work so I stopped by today and requested the Rosco Gel Swatch Kit and they handed me one for free.

used those gels in my moderately successful attempt (see below).

Question: how do you stick them on the flash?

Ordered both Rosco and Lee on Feb 27, got the Lee's today :) They sent them out March 3, at a postage cost of $10.33!

hahaha:

"Thank you for your request. Due to an unprecedented demand for these swatchbooks, Rosco is currently experiencing delays of up to three months in fulfilling individual swatchbook orders."

Think someone should tell them that every 'tog forum on the net is sending this link out so people can use them as flash gels? :P

I added them on my last order at B&H for 0.01 each. There are 2 different ones that I ordered.

Swatchbook 1

Swatchbook 2

I just noticed that the 1st one is out of stock, but the 2nd one has the same things in it.

The description reads:
Sample 1.75 x 2.75" swatchbook of Rosco Cinegel Series gels. Use this to pick the appropriate filters for your next purchase, or cut them out and tape them to small flash units.

So, they know people are using them for gels. I know $0.01 is a lot more than free, but you hardly notice it when you order something else too.

Ya, I ordered from both shortly after this thread went up, and I got my Lee filters last week. Coolness!

I use scotch tape to stick em to my speedlight.

Quite the opposite; I feel sorry for your lack of snow enjoyment. You couldn't pay me to live in Fla...

I ordered from both places around the 23rd. So far, I've only recieved a nice catalog from lee showing all of their cool filters. I want my swatches! ;)

Derf, after seeing those shots, I can't wait to play!
03/11/2008 03:14:42 AM · #42
so that is why they are always out of stock at BH

I tried including them in my last 3 orders, but they were always sold out. :(

hehe Yeah I grew up in nasty Midwest witnters when I m9oved to Atalanta I promised myself I'd never move back to a cold weather climate again, but I ended up moving to Philadelphia for the sake of love. Now that we're in FL, I'm a happ0y camper. If I want snow, I can buy a plane ticket. lol

Lee and Rosco are but two of the work horses in gel color, color correction, and diffusion in my industry.

A third party over looked by most is GAM, (Great American Market).

If you wish to get a swatch booklet from them, fill out their catalog request clicking on their GamColor, GamChroics, GamFusion, and/or Window Grip.

And for those of you that are paying for a swatch book. Save your money.

Swatch books are normally free.

Call the manufacture, or distributer direct, and tell them your a photographer and wish to get a swatch booklet for their gel colors, party colors, color correction, and diffusion.

Just a thought.

I was asked how I did my smoke shot.... Here are some other shots
from the same shoot.

the original image....
//derf.smugmug.com/photos/264984146_TPpCZ-M.jpg
Two flashes right under the smoke with two different gels that
were fired with no on camera flash. The camera was set to like F-
20 at 200th of a second. I was using a denim background clearly show
in the next picture.

//derf.smugmug.com/photos/264984103_YzqtZ-M.jpg
(in the shot above, there were two flashes...one blue gel hitting
the denim background and a second flash with no gel firing from
behind the smoke towards the camera).

//derf.smugmug.com/photos/264984007_BhjXp-M.jpg
In the shot above, I popped the red gel at the smoke and the
background...then used the blue for the background for the gradient.

If it is really dark, you can slow down the shutter to a 2 seconds
or so and get the glow from the incent...then the flash will pop
the smoke to give you this
//derf.smugmug.com/photos/264983811_gctTE-M.jpg

Here is a shot of me using the wall as a background...the denim was
put on about 2 feet behind the incent for that background. In this
shot you can see the red jelled flash sitting on the floor out of
frame, popping the background and making the blue stand out more...
