Hey, my 5yo son is showing signs of ADD (Attention Deficient Disorder). I DO NOT want to put him on drugs!

While doing research online, I see a lot of stuff on a supplement called Flavay. Most of the Google results appear to be Flavay sponsored, but there is a lot of great "user comments."

Has anyone heard of this stuff?

Thanks,
Chad

Beware of anecdotal evidence. It's everywhere and it means next to nothing. ADD, properly diagnosed, is a medical condition that responds best to medical treatment, which may include a combination of medication and behavioral re-learning, strategies, etc. If your son truly has ADD, withholding medical treatment could be a disservice in the long run.

(disclaimer: I'm a school psychologist. I deal with such questions frequently. Bottom line, get good medical advice, then make your own decision)

What he said! Are you seeing the signs or is the school teacher? Our kid's teacher wanted us to drug our kid when he was in second grade even though our doctor said that he was fine...

His teacher. We (the parents) think he is a young 5-year-old boy who isn't quite development enough for kindergarten. We plan on consulting his doc.

Even if he has ADD, I am really afraid of giving my children brain-modifying drugs. The full side effects and long term effects are way too unkown. I just saw a study that said ADD kids with and without drugs ended up at the same place with respect to education, well-being, etc.

I am all for the therapy, re-learning, etc, though.

I am also reading about some foods and food allergies can make things worse too.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 5 as well by his dr. We tried him on Adderal and he had to take Clonidine at night to sleep. After 2 weeks we noticed NO difference and they increased his dosage. A few days later he became a monster child!! He threatened to burn the house down...etc... I pulled him off so fast.

I grew up with a brother with severe ADHD, so I had some experience with it.

I am still not convinced my son has it. He has "some of the traits" but he does well at school..etc...

Be very very careful with that diagnosis. Wait a few years until he has been in school and see how he is doing.

I am very resistant to medicating anyone, especially children. Granted some kids really need the meds. I think that there are many other ways to help a child with ADD than just drugs.

And about the allergy aspect. AFTER he was dx with ADHD we found out he had food allergies to Milk, apple, eggs, wheat, yeast, barley, and shellfish. along with a ton of environmental stuff. Once we modified his diet, got his allergy issues under control his behavior changed dramatically! Food allergies do have effects on behavior!

There is also research into a gluten free diet as well.

always someone who works in the school setting is ready to put these kids on drugs for the sake of their sanity and not the child's. DONT PUT YOUR KIDS ON DRUGS!!!!!!!!! Find a play attention provider in your area and start biofeedback it works and I just started the flavay and at this point anything other than drugs I will try. he takes it willingly because he hates the side effects of the drugs and how it makes him feel. read the add book by william sears and read it like the bible. AGAIN DONT DRUG YOUR OWN KID!!!!!!!!!!

I'm 33 and was diagnosed with ADD (without hyperactivity) in grade two. I never took meds throughout school. I have tried in the last couple years without success. I personally don’t like meds but I am not against them. When they work they work great but, I DO NOT THINK FAMILY DOCTORS ARE SPECIALIZED ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH ADD/ADHD (sorry to any docs on this site that’s my personal experience) There are specialists out there and the books below will help point you in the right direction.

I highly recommend reading BOTH these book they have changed my life. I only wish I found them sooner.

PLEASE PM me if you have questions!!! I would be more then happy to help.

And BTW my wife has ADHD. She was originally diagnosed as Bipolar Disorder and after years of being on the WRONG MEDs (thanks to family doc). Took two years to get worked out! Im not bitter!!!

All,

I am the original poster.

We had my son tested for developmental issues, and he is perfectly normal for his age. He was just young for kindergarten, and his teacher was not the best. He has developed A LOT over the past 6 months.

Thanks for the concern,
Chad

If you would like an alternative to meds, check out this site //www.feingold.org/ for the Feingold Association. At first I was very skeptical that certain additives could be making my son and me worse, but we did a bunch of trials with diets and meds (all under Dr. supervision). We even did blind trials at school where we didn't tell them what we were changing and they gave us feedback as to behavior and let me tell you that the Feingold diet is a life saver!

Also, a good book to read is "ADD: A Different Perception" by Thom Hartmann. His Site

I found great support from these two things. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I didn't want to give drugs to my son either and I've tried giving him several vitamin products. He likes Flavay Plus the best. The way he put it, he said there was a door in front of knowledge in his brain, and now he feels like it's opening. So Flavay works for us. We also cut down sugar. All in all, he's doing much better.

Spam? How so. Sounds like "hugof" was looking for input re ADHD and Flavay....

I don't see any links in his post or profile that would indicate spam. Just saying...

Oh, lets see....Someone who doesn't understand basic English grammar, or know where the shift key is on their computer (except when typing the product name, of course) registers on a photography website, just to perform thread necromancy on a non-photography related topic, and asks specifically about a particular, correctly spelled, brand name snake oil.

When it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck....

Looking around the internet, any thread that mentions ADD on any website is polluted with a bunch of random, out of the blue, queries about this particular product.

kind regards... I dunno: when "wanna" is misspelled "wana," I get my kickers in a kot.
