What makes a lens a good lens for the this kind of setup? I have the feeling that my two lenses are too far away from each other, so that the "looking beam" of the innermost hits the rim or even misses the outermost lens at the edge of the frame.

And, as an option to the lens-on-lens macro setup - does anyone out there use extension tubes to put the lens further away from the camera body? And are there any good full-automatic extension tubes that passes on all the focusing, aperture etc information between lens and body and doesn't screw the VR? (for Nikon)

Sorry, not been too active in this thread so far. I've been stuck on a project that involves twelve-hour days, seven days a week. I hope to get time soon to do the participant list thing in my original post.

I will be using my 50mm f/1.8 lens with a reversing ring.

Sounds good. I need to renew my family zoo membership since it expired a couple months back.

I'm not sure exactly why the 200mm f4 works so well in this manner, but it is probably due to it being a true telephoto design. Not many lenses are. Personally, I'd never use a zoom in this type of set up, but I know many members of the community here do with decent results. Well at least decent results for web viewing, I doubt the results would be very sharp in an 11x14 print.

As far as extension tubes there only a few with electrical contacts on the market, with the best being the Kenko versions. They only have seven contacts not the 8-10 needed for AF-S focusing or VR. Although VR could potentially be helpful in macro, AF is pretty much useless. If you do indeed purchase the Kenko tubes, do so at an established retailer like B&H and not off ebay. After my original set was stolen I thought I'd save a few bucks and get my replacement set off ebay. Although they looked identical, the ebay versions were crap with not nearly as tight of tolerances and I had to often twist them to make contact. They were either fake or rejects, but either way it was no bargain.

edit to add...

For reversing a lens either on camera or directly on the body I'd recommend Nikon shooters get the Nikon BR-3 for both physical and flare protection for the exposed rear element. It also has 52mm filter threads so filters can be added or used with the Nikon BR-2A lens reversing ring it can act as a moderate length noncoupled extension tube.

You know what. I have had little time and ability to actually go out shooting, no transport is a big issue but I did go out the other day with a guy for a shoot, and I met some bloke shooting the surf with a 1D mkIII and a 600mm f4 with a 2X on it That was interesting, my 70-200 didn't quite cut it

Sorry, but new here. How do these side challenges work? where do we submit the results? Do we have to submit daily? Please explain. I would like to try some more macro shots.

Many Thanks.

There will be a thread started when the challenge begins and everyone simply uploads each day's shots to their portfolio and posts to the thread with a thumbnail link to the photo. Nobody has to submit daily, although trying to, at least, is part of the challenge itself.

I'm going to be gone the first 10 days of March. So if it's ok by you, I'll jump in when I get back!

Count me in on this, I need something to make me take more pictures.

I'm in. Need to dig out the 105mm and do some playing with it again.

Both added.

I'm in - just ordered the 52mm reversing ring for my Nikon 50mm 1.8 - this should be interesting (and I'm guessing it's going to get pricey... :-).

Anyone have a ringlight they'd suggest that would fit multiple lens sizes for a Nikon D300?

Going to have to bow out of this challenge, sorry. I'll be away for a week in March and although I'll be taking pics I won't be editing them because the laptop sucks for that. Plus I don't know what kind of internet access I'll have so I might not be able to comment much.

bummer... but you can always jump back in for the last half when you get back, yes?

instead of spending the money on a ringlight (unless you just really want to, just get an extra sb-600 and shoot wirelessly. it's how i do it. in a lot of cases, you probably don't even need an extra flash...

i'd suggest getting something like a lumiquest ultrasoft or mini softbox. a small tabletop sized tripod helps as well...

Thanks TeeCeeJay for asking - I had the same question, and thanks to Mr_Pants for answering. So I'll give it a try as well, although I must already admit now that I won't be able to upload a shot daily. But I like the idea!

This is perfect timing! I just purchased a Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro and this sounds like the ideal way to test drive it. Count me in please.
