We've done the January 'Where You Live' and we're in the middle of the February 'Self Portrait' side challenges. How about one for March? I've just got a newish macro lens, so, out of self-interest, I propose a month of macro shots. This is just another area of photography where I'm totally all at sea, so the idea of some practice is quite appealing to me.

Is anyone in for this, or is it just me, then?

OK, so far we've got:

Sounds like a great idea. Trouble is I'm on holiday during March (nothing wrong with that!), probably means I can't post everyday. I would definitely be up for this though.

this is a good one since it is interesting just taking shots of stuff indoors. Not sure how many folks have the capability of macro shooting, though.

Sign me up for this one. I need an excuse to pull my macro lenses out more often.

Loved the last macro side challenge I participated in, sign me up for this one.

If we can do this without a macro lens, then I am in. I figure I can just zoom in with my telephoto lens.

there are a couple of relatively inexpensive options. In order of cheapness: 1) hold a 50mm lens reversed onto your camera body 2) get a macro adapter ring that allows you to mount said 50mm lens onto your zoom lens ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/65000-69999/66193/120/489438.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/65000-69999/66193/120/489438.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' (results in high mag ratios too!) 3) make simple mount in order to mount said lens onto the body see ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/65000-69999/66193/120/489437.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/65000-69999/66193/120/489437.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' 4) extension tubes mounted between any of your lenses and the body.

The beauty of the reversed 50mm lens is that since you will not have electronic connections, and are just using the optics, you can use any lens including totally manual lenses from other manufacturers. i've used an old minolta f1.8 lens, and that worked great. can pick these up on ebay for cheap!

I've been looking for a reason to take more photos... this sounds like it!

Sounds good I'd love to have an excuse to experiment with some macros. Not sure if the Kit lens on my new Rebel is up to it, but my S5 will focus at a distance of zero.

I do have a reverse ring. I hate using it because i need my tripod in order to get a really good pic. I have not touched my other two lenses since I got the 50-200 so it will probably be a way for me to at least use one of them again. I'll probably use the 14-45 and then also my 50-200 till I get kicked out for not being macro enough :P

I'm in... thanks

Yes, zooming in and cropping is fine. Let's even call it a close-up and macro side-challenge.

Sounds good. I have been meaning to get back into the side challenges. Count me in.

I love macro so I am in as well.....
02/19/2008 08:15:04 AM · #15
Count me in! My new gear arrives next week and I'm sure I could force myself to use the macro for a month ;o)
02/19/2008 08:48:08 AM · #16
i can't commit to 'every day' (i failed miserably in where i live), but i have a macro lens and need to learn to use it.
02/19/2008 09:11:42 AM · #17
I would be interested. I can commit to once a week definately. When I can I will try to do daily.
02/19/2008 10:06:03 AM · #18
macros? did some one say macros?

i'm in.

i had quite a bit of fun doing a previous 30 day macro challenge...

I've started experimenting with a reversed 50 mm f1.8 reversed in front of my 55-200 VR zoomer as described above. The magnification is so great that it's hard to find objects small enough to fit the frame! But it's fun to try, so count me in :)

Look for me to be in on Saturdays, or maybe 2 days a week. We should be seeing some great images, and hearing about some interesting rigs used to get them for this challenge.
I like macro, but don't shoot that way a lot. This challenge will be fun and also good for my portfolio.
I will not be able to comment a lot, as I don't have the 3 hours a day that it takes me to comment on a large number of images daily that I have done in other side challenges. I will try to spread comments so that everyone who is in gets at least a few over the month.
I see some users who are really good at macro are already in for this one.

I'm up for 31 days of macro in March. It will actually force me to get some cobb-webbs out of some of my gear;-).
Plus I was only able to get half way thru in the Oct '06 30 days of macro, so I have I need to make up for it.
02/19/2008 10:27:59 AM · #22
Hey, how about a twist with this 30 days of macro and post all images full frame with no cropping?
02/19/2008 02:38:20 PM · #23
Why, no cropping? My reversed-50-mm-on-front setup doesn't nearly fill the frame at the wide end, so it's hard to do much on the composition without cropping.

btw, I'm in for one or two shots a week or so, not every day.

Hey I'd be up for that. I'll do it if you will. I've got a 50mm and 100mm macro and a few extension tubes to play with, so filling the frame should not be a problem for me.

I've also got a set of 3 vivitar 49mm close up filters, that I'll gladly send to the first person who can use them for this challenge. All you pay is postage, and they are yours to keep. (49mm is the standard filter ring size on many legacy Pentax primes).

Not sure I'll shoot all 30 days, but planning on shooting on weekends and midweek when I can, then processing and posting one a day throughout the month if I can.

To promote true macro range images.

Being a Nikon shooter you should look for a used Nikkor 200mm f4. It was always considered a great lens for the money, but it is really known for being an outstanding lens to reverse a lens on. And it can be found really cheap$$$. Also it performs quite well with extension tubes for longer distance shy subjects like butterflys.

My butterfly setup...
