What is disambiguation and why is it one of the columns on my istock's sales page?

It refers to the removal of ambiguity. I think wikipedia made the term popular. Taking a term or word that could refer to several things and breaking it down into possible meanings (or wiki entries).

Edit to add: I have no idea how iStock is using it.

On iStock it means that their servers look at your supplied keyword and ask you what you meant. I.e. you give them 'orange' and the site asks you whether you mean the colour or the fruit.

and files that are not disambiguated show up lower in the search results... so it is a good (and very laboursome task) to do

Just for the purposes of disambiguation - could you clarify your use of the word 'hammock ' here ?

Hammock
noun
1. a small natural hill [syn: knoll]
2. a hanging bed of canvas or rope netting (usually suspended between two trees); swings easily

I take it you are after a small natural hill ?

:-)

1. As in, "I saw a shadowy figure with a gun on that grassy hammock."

i like ambiguity better. leaves more to think about.

and i've always wanted a grass hammock to nap on, the ropes tend to dig into my skin...
