Does anyone know how to tackle this issue? What I see in photoshop looks good. I submit it, and review, and the photo is much darker on-line. I have unsubmitted, resubmitted a number of times - all the time with a newly adjusted photo to even "over lighten" it to see what it would look like on-line. Any suggestions other than to continue this unsubmit/resubmit circus? What might I be doing wrong? I'm on my way to work now. Would appreciate any comments - I'll be back this afternoon (EDT).
Thanks!

What does the submission look like on your computer as a jpeg file before you submit it. Not in Photoshop, in a jpeg viewer?

How do other submissions look to you? About right?

Knowing these things will help you narrow down the problem.

I can't understand why it would change at all. The ONLY thing I could possibly think of would be if you're submitting an image bigger than 640x480, and the site has to resize it. But even then, at worse, there MAY be some pixelization, if the newly resized jpg is of lower quality than the original. I wouldn't expect it to get darker or lighter.

One thing you could try:

Upload your original, then, while reviewing it on DPC, save a copy to your hard drive. Then, open both the original and DPC version in your image editing program, and look at the histograms. That'll tell you if one is darker than the other.

Actually, this is a pretty common problem. I find that my stuff also ends up darker when posted on the web more often than not. Ususally it's actually the gamma that gets screwed up, so I compensate by increasing the gamma to 1.1 in PS before saving. The best way to make sure all's well is to use 'save for web' in photoshop, then leave the image open and submit the web sized image. Check out how it looks on the site, then adjust the original accordingly, 'save for web' again, and repeat.

That's odd. I went back and looked at my two submissions to date, and both looked exactly the same in original and the DPC version. I even brought them all into photoshop, and they had the EXACT same histogram.

I've never experienced darkened images on the web before. I wonder if it's a browser issue. If you use your browser to view your original image file, does it look darker in that case?

I get the same thing.

I actually have to brighten my gamma to at least 1.2 after all my editing and before submission. I have found that Photoshop is a brighter viewer (pun intended) than other jpeg viewers.

I also like to see my submission printed as well before submitting. That way I don't get that extra backlighting of a monitor helping the brightness at all.

If your version of Photoshop has Image Ready, you can preview the image on a browser. That may help. The web had it's own color spce as I understand it. However, I have never noticed a problem on my own computer. Perhaps it is the color space you are using in photoshop that is cauing the difference.

My theory is that people who use Adobe Gamma for system-wide calibration are the ones who have this problem. Adobe Gamma makes an ICC profile that all of the ICC compliant programs on your system use. The trouble is, most web browsers are not ICC compliant and seem to lower the gamma.

Thank you everyone for your input! I will give these ideas a go.
I adjusted my gamma in windows because I couldn't find it in photoshop (I have PS 5.0 LE). I just returned from work to find all the suggestions. Will let you know if I succeed! (clock is ticking! wish me luck!).
