So, I took the plunge and tried to capture a sunset yesterday. I'll be moving to where I took this very soon and I can't wait. Lovely little village. Any comments and constructive criticism most welcome!

Wendy, the image you posted is in "Gif" format, not JPG. That stands for "graphic image format", and it is a format designed for web graphics, not photographs. You need to be sure to specify JPG when you save the image for the web. This will eliminate the banding and pixelization you are seeing, most likely.
