Would I be able to handhold it at 300mm in sunlight? |

in general as long as the shutter speed is above 1/300 you will be fine i.e shutter speed is above the focal length |

Sure... you could even handhold it in the dark, pitch black even, if you were holding it when the light went off ;)
I have a Canon 70-300 lens and have no problem holding it in daylight... as long as the shutter speed is sufficiently fast, you'll be right. |

I find a monopod really helps, even with the reciprocal rule I find it hard to get rid of shake! |

i regularly hand hold 400mm @ 1/125 without trouble
and i shoot bands @ 1/25 @ 200mm hand held (both without IS)
its all about practice, i did buy a monopod but never got on with it, so it just sits under the desk in my office..
