Would I be able to handhold it at 300mm in sunlight?

in general as long as the shutter speed is above 1/300 you will be fine i.e shutter speed is above the focal length

Sure... you could even handhold it in the dark, pitch black even, if you were holding it when the light went off ;)

I have a Canon 70-300 lens and have no problem holding it in daylight... as long as the shutter speed is sufficiently fast, you'll be right.

I find a monopod really helps, even with the reciprocal rule I find it hard to get rid of shake!

i regularly hand hold 400mm @ 1/125 without trouble

and i shoot bands @ 1/25 @ 200mm hand held (both without IS)

its all about practice, i did buy a monopod but never got on with it, so it just sits under the desk in my office..
