Ok I just went through and did my initial voting. I'll go back in a bit and comment more and see if I want to change my vote on any of them. Here was my thinking on this challenge and how I approached my voting. First off the image must have two eyes in the shot and at least one of them must be in good, sharp focus. If they passed those two requirements, I next looked to see if the eyes were the main feature, or at least one of the main features of the image. That does not mean that the image had to be a crop or a close up of just the eyes. In fact, I'd rather it not be, but didn't necessarily count off for that. (My own shot happens to be a full face shot) However, to me the eyes should really pop or "speak" in the shot. That is the most important aspect of the shot for me in this challenge.

So basically all single eye shots immediately got no higher than a 4 from me. From there on I gave scores according to how the image met my next set of requirements. I'll say that I have not handed out this many low votes for a challenge in a long time. I'm not saying that my way is right and that someone else's is wrong. That's just how I feel and how I viewed the challenge and approached the voting.

I have no idea how my own entry is doing because I made the decision that in '08, I'd leave the scores turned off during voting so as to cure my incessant impulse to hit the update button and obsess about my score. I will say that I only have 1 comment though so I'm sure I can't be doing that great.

just be careful when you look... some of those "single eye shots" actually have more than one eye in them...

"So basically all single eye shots immediately got no higher than a 4 from me."

I disagree. Some of the highest votes I have given were to 1 eye shots. Your both eyes with the face and the "eyes should really pop" is in my opinion dime a dozen portrait eye shots. I voted on of course technical execution but also more on taking the theme and being creative, creativity counts.

Well, at least the two of you balance each other out, lol. Personally I believe people should not post narrow minded voting criteria in voting threads. I believe it implies your way is the correct way of voting. The challenge description says eye and it says eyes, why would either way be wrong?

I don't get that he is stating his way is the only way but he is letting you know where he stands in his voting standard for this challenge. I disagree with his assesment but it's his right to vote by those standards, at least he is consistent and you know where he's coming from.

That might have merit if I hadn't said this:

Everyone is entitled to their way of voting. Even if we all disagree. Thats the beauty of the art. Everyone interprets it in their own way. There should be no guidelines on that.

Even though I disagree on the trolls who vote everyone a 1 and their winners a 10, but hey thats their right, they are entitled to it. Its an open voting, so anyone who is registered can vote.

If this was a panel of judges, thats a different story. But its all subjective in the end anyway.

OK, this isn't personal, and you did add a disclaimer, but so did I. I said it "implies", whether you state it doesn't or not. And I find that it happens in a lot of threads and I do believe that it influences other voters. Why not just leave those people a comment telling them why you voted the way you did? It's your right to vote the way you want and I didn't say it was wrong. I just wonder why people need to advertise their voting habits to the whole site on a scores thread.

I get what you're saying. I did see a handful of single eye shots that I really did like. (I even fav'd one) I just felt that based on the challenge, there should be two in the shot.

*shrugs* That's just how I feel.

Can't we get beyond the LITERAL definition of the challenge titles anymore, lol.
Thank goodness I stayed out of this mess. Some great shots and many really yucky shots. Not voting this one.
Good luck to all!

HAHA good catch. I think people should just vote on the pics they like best. Stay out of the 1 or 2 eye debate. I like looking at peoples interpretation of the theme.

Can I request a change of the thread title to "Keep an EYE on your score"?
02/06/2008 01:17:16 PM · #91
"It's said the eye is the window to the soul."

I'll go out on a limb and say that of all the "eyeball shots" I just looked at none
conveyed the window into anything, let alone the soul.

"Certainly, eyes are compelling and mysterious. "

I'll follow by saying that none of those shots IMO, were in any way, compelling or mysterious.

I'm sure there may be exceptions to what I just said and some people may be seeing something in a few of those images that I am not.

I think the true essence of the Challenge lies in the words "eyes...window of the soul", "compelling", "mysterious" and of course the obvious respectable, technical attributes.

I seriously hope that people aren't voting shots low because they are Not eye macros.

Adding...

One eye or two??? WTF! What does that have to do with anything. I'd rather see ONE soulful eye than two dead ones, that reveal nothing.

LOL I guess everyone is right then due to the title and the desc...

Title: The Eyes Have It!

Description: It's said the EYE is the window to the soul. Certainly, eyes are compelling and mysterious. Eyes are also among the most challenging features to photograph well. Give us a look at your best eyes, animal or human.

Details: It's said the eye is the window to the soul. Certainly, eyes are compelling and mysterious. Eyes are also among the most challenging features to photograph well. Give us a look at your best eyes, animal or human.

For the record, I am well aware that in part of the description, it uses the term "eye" and not "eyes". But to ME the part that has "eye" is not telling you what to submit for the challenge. It's not giving you any direction. The final sentence is. It says "Give us a look at your best eyes, animal or human." So that is where I formed my opinion from. Now if it had said " Give us a look at your best eye shot, animal or human", then I'd feel different.

Again, I'm not saying that I'm right, that's just my opinion.

Since I contributed to the thread getting derailed I'll try to put it back on track. Here I am, still low. At least I know who gave me one of my low votes...:)
