Oh puh-lease... I don't want to moan but I can't help myself...there's SO many good ideas out there, and people complaining about boredom....and we're still getting level IV recycles. Come on guys, really... how about a bit of originality and diversity in the challenges?

All I can say is that I've had two shots recently that would've fit, but they're in other challenges! Not that I'm complaining about my rivers result. :)

I agree! May be boring to some, but i have a devil of a time coming up with ideas. At least with this one I may stand a chance.

Now where is the requisite someone with links to the last three " Reflections Without Mirrors" challenges? I could only locate the first.

I agree completely. I can't figure out if it is laziness, or just the further decline of what could be something wonderful. Ho hum, another challnege that I will probably sit out. My membership fee is really a worthy cost with the lack of decent challenges, lack of a DPL season, and the same recycled, rehashed, redone, garbage of challenge ideas. Fuuny, I could have sworn I read how people are tired of some photos being overdone on DPC. I wonder why they feel that way? Could it be because we keep rehashing the same challenges so everyone tries to copy what did well last time? I think so. Pitty!

And this is why we keep rehashing stuff and challenges get boring....people look to what one last time and try to copy it.

Or at the very least be creative and call it Water Reflections, instead. :P

Windows are good. Needn't be water. Polished marble, anyone? Reach. Stretch. DON'T go see what won last time.

For those who are bored, your challenge is to come up with something new that hasn't been done before. The fact that the challenge top HAS been done before just makes it an even bigger challenge. Find a reflection where nobody expects to see one.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are still working on learning to do well that which has been done before. :) Hmm, that sentence structure was pretty convoluted, but it seemed the only way to say that which I wanted to say. :)

LOL! I went to bed last night thinking of non-mirror and non-water reflective surfaces or locations and tbh I couldn't come up with too many. I try not to look at old challenges when getting ready for a new one so that I'm not influenced by other people's (old) ideas but in this case I think might have to.

Here's the crux of it: We only just shot Rivers and Streams. I know it's different but it seems very similar. Likewise we shot Childhood without Children, and then Earliest Memory (same same but different). Before that it was Object Contrast By Isolation following on Alone In A Crowd a week or two later. My point is that because the challenges aren't very specific in the details there's a LOT of overlap. I know it's a pain in the neck and not easy to handle, but it just seems from this end of things that the challenges are very samey (with the noble exception of Earliest Memory which was super tough).

Here's a controversial idea....use the voting system to allow DPC members to vote on the challenge selection itself. Doesn't have to be the final say, but it would certainly give the SC more ability to 'take the temperature' of DPC.

I predict that the ribbon winners will be landscapes over water... 'nuff said

You're probably right, but I'd really enjoy seeing some creative risk-taking entries using surfaces other than water. Especially from some of the "big guns" around here. :-)

As a new member I don’t have a problem with repeat challenges. I can see how the long time members may see this as boring. However I can also see where it would be hard for the SC and Langdon to come up with totally new challenges week after week. After all, this site is 6 years old. With as many challenges as they offer each week it can’t be that easy IMO.

I think those who are complaining about repeats should look at it from a different angel. Instead of looking at it as a repeat, why not see it as an opportunity to finish higher than you did in the previous challenge of the same name? It’s almost like some people are saying “I’ve already shot one reflection shot so why would I ever want to do another?” WHAT? Are you kidding me. Once you’ve taken a photograph of something you don’t want to take another? PLEASE! If in the last reflection challenge you finished in 80th place wouldn’t you try to do better in this one? I know I would! For example, I just finished 232 out of 249 in Birds II. (“My worst finish yet”) I can’t wait for Birds III so that I can hopefully do way better. I made a huge mistake with my Birds entry. I over processed it and made it look like a painting. It’s a nice picture but it’s not really great photography. I learned from it. Am I mad about it? NO. But you can bet I’ll try to do better in the next one. Not only should you be in competition with the other members here, you should be trying to beat yourself as well. That’s how you get better. Don’t we all want that? I sure hope so!

I just went back over threads in this forum for the past 6 months ==> Challenge Suggestions, funny, I didn't see any of them created by you. ???

Got some ideas? Let's here 'em. Better yet, post them in the Challenge Suggestions forum.

edit to fix first link alignment.

Take note that the ones complaining about repeat challenges haven't even done a previous Reflections without Mirrors challenge.

FWIW....

Nope i havent as it turns out (afaik) but in general terms the OPs sentiment is valid... there are a huge amount of suggestions in the Challenge Suggestions forum that i have seen and thought "oh wow that is a cool idea" and have never come to light.

I'm kinda on the fence on this one - whilst it is nice to "have another go" it is also nice to have challenges which arent just a licence for the stock show of images to ribbon, like this one is with the obvious pull of the eye candy landscape over water shot. Yes you might say "do your own thing", but personally i am on here to compete, not explore my artistic side (i do that in my spare time)... the two are fairly mutually exclusive when it comes to DPC and getting a good score. (my FS entry sitting on 5.25 at the moment is testament to that - i took a gamble that people might see something in the shot - but alas as it was bereft of colour, i have suffered)

There will always be those that don't like a challenge topic for one reason or another - that's life. :-)

Quick peek at the last 100 challenges completed:

Repeated topics 46
New Original Topics 46
Free Studies/Best Of 8

Looks to be a fairly even distribution of repeats vs new. JMO of course. :-P

it was just my 1st reaction to challenge, you know what i mean : "not again." :-)
and as someone said here in thread there really ARE other themes and possible challenge topics ... right?

i mean this --> //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=list&FORUM_SECTION_ID=3

The more we strive NOT to repeat topics, the more and more esoteric our challenges become. I'm all in FAVOR of repeating topics that are fundamental in nature. I like doing them over again, trying new twists on them. And plenty on new-member turnover means that a lot of people have never DONE these challenges before, right? I mean, should I never have the chance to do a "Macro" challenge because I joined after it was done?

In summary, I don't see a problem with this at all. "Reflections Without Mirrors" is a timeless and interesting topic, as, indeed, are most (if not all) of the ones that get repeated.
