I had several decent shots this week, and it was tough to choose. I liked the "feel" of my entry, but it was also the least sharp of the group.

I was really torn between my entry:

and this one:

I figured there would be too many duck entries.

I struggled to decide which to submit.
In retrospect, this may have been the better choice.

I think that you made a good choice, both are good but I prefer the one you entered.

Statement (as I promissed):

To those who think this picture is just another "photo", I feel sorry for you because this is more than a "photo", it's a story teller. It's more than a black backward predator. This bird has a mission which just happens to see... it has a prey that about the kill. Catching that moment is one thing, putting in B&W and making the story more dramatic is other. What would you like to see? which are the winners, probably very colorful sharp images. It's ok, no problem with that... My words only to those thought that I didn't give what I should of give to DPC voters.

I dare those people... actually I challenge those people to catch similar moment with their lenses and bring to us. Most can't because they don't know how to tell a good story.

Photographers eyes goes through the lenses, here is what else you should learn: your photographs should start from your subjects, go through lenses and your eyes and reach to your imagination.

Shadows, lighting, sharpness... technical stuff, are only %30 of great photos. Why do you think grainy photos makes the largest galleries in Europe, why do you think some photos you thought worthless keep coming to first page of largest magazines? Because of "imagination", the "story"... the "inner beauty".

booboo_goon - "I hope other can see it what I see, you must know how they are"
EstimatedEyes - "I think this one is going to get overlooked"
Melethia - "I love the natural framing and the sense of impending doom for some small critter out there"
UrfaTheGreat - "love the atmosphere"

Visit those people and get some idea of "imagination"... technical part is easy; you can't capture imagination, story by setting your camera perfectly...

You think whatever you want to think I guess, I feel sorry for you to be half blind...

My photo will decorate my first page for a long time. If you didn't see what you miss, check it out whenever you want and never be afraid of learning.

FP

Does all this whining make you feel better. There is but one judge you need concern yourself with and that is yourself. For you to whine on and on leads me to believe you are quite insecure and basically a shallow individual. Your photography says otherwise. It certainly speaks better of you than you do yourself.

After a more thorough look at your image, I have at least two questions. How was it the wings are behind the upper branch, which appears to be on a even plane with the lower branch? Why does a tip of a feather appear in front of the branch on the tip of the right wing, yet the rest of the wing is clearly behind the branch?

Here is my entry:

and here are the outtakes I said I would post:

(a color version of my entry)

I knew there was a risk entering a black and white with the tones so subtle (comments about the wing) but it really dows look nice larger and on a calibrated monitor. Thanks to all who commented and voted.

On the other hand, I am very secure person and I do believe in myself very much. When I believe myself I talk about it. I talk about something should probably need to be told. I am not going to drink my milk and go to bed if I have something in my mind, that's not me. I hear others, you'll hear mine. I, most of the time, respect to the others, I expect the same.

Here are some outakes, minus a few more that I have. I had a hard time picking but I went with a last minute shot that finished well so I'm happy and I still have a gob of other photos I like.

You entry was the right choice by me. I hate how well Canon shoots at 1800 ISO and still leaves detail after cleaning. I would have a much better chance at a decent shot if I coould push my D200 that high. Hell, I barely can get anything usable at 800 ISO. Maybe there is an upgrade in my future after looking at Nikon's new offerings.

Here are my outtakes - one of these would have probably scored better than the one I did enter but for some reason I really liked that one - so busy and cheerful just like the birds in real life.

Here's one of my outtakes. I'm totally happy with my score but I wonder if this would have done better.
