ok so i have photoshop CS3 which has been working fine but all of a sudden whenever i press "save" or "save as" or hit "control + s" the save folder will flash very quickly then my whole computer will freeze and i lose all my work. every other button works fine its just when i save it. has this happened to anyone else or does anyone else know how to fix it?

A few questions:

1) Are you using a Mac or a PC?
2) Are you saving the files to a local drive, or an external drive?
3) Does this happen to any file you try to save, or just that one file?
4) Is your hard drive full?

1) Pc
2) It flashes so quickly that i cant choose where but i have both
3) Any file from both the local drive or the extrenal
4) No because i can still import photos i just cant save the ones ive edited

Let's find out if the directory you are using is corrupt. Give this a try...

In Windows Explorer, create a new folder in a completely different location (I suggest the desktop). Copy the image you want to edit, and paste it into the new folder. In Photoshop, open up the image from its new location. Try to save it, and see if it still crashes.

yea same thing happens, the whole thing froze up

I've looked on the web for more answers, here is one article that might help.

"I simply unchecked the 'Enable Version Cue' option in the preferences and no more problems whatsoever!"
