Abercrombie and Fitch have used photos that have (in public) pushed the line of decency (in a very bad way). Virginia Beach cops finally did something about it.

Expect the usual hue and cry of censorship, yada yada yada.

//hamptonroads.com/node/452689

Police, saying they were responding to citizen complaints, carted away two large promotional photographs from the Abercrombie & Fitch store in Lynnhaven Mall on Saturday and cited the manager on obscenity charges.

Adam Bernstein, a police spokesman, said the seizure and the issuance of the summons came only after store management had not heeded warnings to remove the images.

They were warned.

Yeah well... If that image on the article is the best they can do then it's clearly time for the cops to find something better to do

Sited the manager for obscenity? Yeah, like he had a say in the matter.

I fail to see how a B&W photo of people's backs is obscene.

Yes the American Taliban (i.e. the religious right minority) rears its ugly head yet again. Telling all the rest of us how to live.

If you don't like the photo, don't shop there or go in the store - that seems like a pretty easy concept.

What in the world is wrong with that photo?? A buttcrack? It's not even the whole thing!! Guys walk around all the time with thier pants hangin down like that... don't see the cops out there handin out citations to them...

Everyone is dressed in that photo... even if the hint is that they won't be soon.

//www.abercrombie.com/anf/lifestyles/html/photogallery.html <=== Entirely safe for work, kids or anyone that isn't entirely effed in the head.

The photos from that campaign are quite well done.

I checked the photos on the website...and none of them are obscene in my eyes...I see much worse in the fashion shops and on huge posters on the walls and windows of music stores...and kids certainly go there.

That's easy to say, but when the photos are on the outside of the store at the mall, you'd have to avoid the entire mall in order not to see them. It's the same way with the Victorias Secret photos. I HATE that everytime I take my seven year old son to the mall, I have to walk him past gigantic photos of half naked women, even if we don't actually go into the Victorias Secret store. I know that in some parts of the world images like that are totally normal and an accepted part of society, but in my house, we try to keep our kids away from things like that. It's just frustrating that sometimes we're bombarded with those images whether we like it or not.

Here we go again ... the right wing wacko moralists have to PROTECT OUR CHILDREN... jeez I get really tired of this.

That series is not in the mind of any sane person anything remotely close to obscene... the only obsenity is in the minds of those that put on that label.

What is this world comming to ...

Guys, lets'please keep the thread on the original topic. Which, surprisingly, was not Leroy's cheese photo.

Sorry :-(

But I don't think the A&F shots are obscene and I thought that by comparison of some ones butt crack that cheese photo wins that race hands down. FWIW my opinion is that is about as stupid as it gets and all these ugly appearances of the thought police really piss me off. Don't like it don't look!!!!!

These are the current results from the poll on that site... I happen to agree with nomad469

The concern may be just that "even if the hint is that they won't be soon." The far left person is a female. What if it was your daughter. What would you think of her going to a lake with 3 guys with the clear intent of removing their clothing? These ads are directed towards the teens that Abercrombie wants to bring in. What is it telling them? It's certainly not just a jeans ad.

I can see how parents and probably grandparents would want this type of advertising removed.

The next time you see a nine year old at the mall bend over and expose her thong, ask yourself where she's getting those ideas. I DO think that kids are affected by being constantly bombarded by adult images, and I would like to be able to shelter my kids from that as long as I can. My kids are only 4 and 7. They really don't need to see half naked people everywhere they go. They just don't.

The cited article mentions two photos. From the description I suspect that they were more concerned with the one that is not shown in the link.

That description was: "The other image is of a woman who is topless and whose "breast is displayed with her hand covering just the nipple portion," Bernstein said. "You could still pretty much see the rest of the breast.""

I could not find any image at the company web site that matched that description, nor could I find it at any of the new releases on the incident.

Abercrombie and Fitch

It could be the third one in the photo gallery. It's actually her elbow covering her nipple.

Something you can find in a public place on Piazza della Signori in Florence, Italy:
(Naked) David by Michelangelo
(The page also shows a picture of the statue, don't be shocked ;-) ).

I hope the Virginia Beach Cops don't pass by Piazza della Signori.

I don't think the children there even bother to look up any more, they are just used to the statue.

We have a saying here that goes more or less: Different countries, different mores.
