I found voting on this one painful and I'm not near 20% yet... I gave up voting on meeting the challenge on this one, I'm voting purely on photo quality this time.
I didn't enter so I wouldn't vote at all, but there was one photo I wanted my vote counted on so now I must get to 20%...

Perhaps it's because I know there's something missing from the photo that I enter to gain feedback. Yes, by all means view each photo with the same standard and vote that way. To actually discourage entering a photo because it doesn't live up to "our" standards, is I think a bit harsh and subjective.

I don't think it is wrong to want to get feedback on a given photo. The "Individual Photo Discussion" forum specifically provides that channel of communication. I would think, however, for a challenge entry, that you do yourself and the community a disservice if you submit something that you yourself do not think is your best attempt.

Note that a "best attempt" doesn't have to mean ribbon worthy or even the best work that you have done to date. You might have been constrained by time or your environment or whatever and that could have resulted in an image that was not your best. If, however, you just want to submit a photo for feedback, IMHO, the forum rather than a challenge is a beter place for it.

If for no other reason, you have the opportunity to present what you think worked and didn't work in the context of the picture.

I got harsh on pics i did not think met the challenge. In my opinion, trying to be creative in meeting hte challenge subject is not the point. Taking an excellent photo of something obvious is the point. If the challenge was 'stop sign in sunshine' i hope we'd get 200 shots of a stop sign in the sun. You can do that well, badly or in between. A pic of a cat titled 'Looking at a stop sign on a sunny day' gets a one from me. There are websites and contests that are not as 'subject' oriented for those type of entries.

I always vote on all pics. I commented on 49% this time. I try to comment on at least 20%. (cut and paste for some of them that are common).

I think this quote (which I ran across on this site) is apropos to this discussion:

No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should be encouraged to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit.

I want to add that I almost quit voting too, but I made myself keep at it, and I'm really glad; I found some amazing shots! I'm glad I didn't miss them; these photographers deserve to have their work valued. So hang in, please!

Sometimes it's difficult to portray themes through conventional means, and the use of props and staged shots is necessary. For example in order to represent war, or good versus evil, and without being in a war zone or getting lucky enough to catch god and the devil in fisticuffs, props are necessary. Many people chose chess pieces (myself included) which I think is quite appropriate.

I have just stopped voting on the Conflict challenge. I don't think I can continue. There are just so many images that in my opinion don't meet the challenge or are just bad examples of photography skill. For some reason it seems to me the the open challenges have become nothing more then Photosig or the likes where people upload any and everything that they may have captured. A shoehorn here and there is one thing, but submitting some of these shots that don't even come close to being 'conflict' and are poorly exposed images is just a waste. Where did the desire to submit good photographs go?

Everyone can give out some votes on "Mundane" haven't receive a vote in a day :P

I guess I need to offer a general apology. I received a PM asking me not to not send PM messages until after the voting was over because I had responded with a PM to a comment on my submission. I didn't realize I needed to wait; I was just responding to the comment made. My apologies to anyone who might have been upset that I responded to their comment. I was unaware of the protocol.

it's hit or miss on DPC...."conflict" has just been a miss. But, it seems to me that a complaining thread could sway people that have not voted yet OR lead the curious to look at what all the commotion is about and vote it down.
