I have read a pretty scathing review on the F828 in this weeks 'Amateur Photographer', which is published in the U.K. Without going into too much detail the reviewer was not impressed.
So I wondered what the 'real' people, the users, think of the F828 and get some of their opinions.

I shot a motorcycle even this past weekend. A fellow photographer had his month old 828 on hand with some nice expensive toys... Half way through the event he switched back to the 707 he brought with him as a back-up. He didn't have anything good to say about it other than how it looked and the screen.
After comparing shots, my 717 shots were way better than his!

| I've had my 828 for just over a month now...pretty much still learning about all the bells and whistles. I've had a few problems with it, but attribute them to operator error. I'm a Sony guy from the early 505 to the 717 to the 828. In my opinion, the 828 beats it's predecessors hands down! Sure it cost more... but the quality of the pics, especially when they're printed out, is superior by far. I feel with a little more training on this thing, I'll be taking better pictures with less effort than I ever did. |

The F828 is a camera I really wanted to like because of its feature set. I read everything I could on it and looked closely at every full-size image sample I could find and I just wasn't happy with the amount of noise it had at even at low ISO's. The chromatic aberations and color finging issues I believe are from a first batch of cameras with mistakes in the lens coatings and should be corrected for the most part. That what I read anyways and I don't see those problems in all samples so I tend to believe it. But even with the quality issues I still really wanted to like it and so I went and checked one out in a store. It wasn't bad at all and I was impressed with the mechanical zoom and cool way that the flash popped up and improved EVF but was a little turned off by the large feel of it compared to my F707. I agree that a bigger hand grip was needed but I think Sony went a little too far with the grip and the largeness of it. I also don't like the new position of the EVF/LCD switch because it was more awkward to use. By now it should have an auto switch feature like Minolta has. The quality was good. One of the reasons I wanted to like it so much was the zoom range with the moderate wide angle that my F707 doesn't have. So even though I don't own an F828 I did investigate it thoroughly and have decided that even though they came close on this model it isn't the right camera for me. I will most likely get the Digital Rebel or similar SLR style camera. For now I will still enjoy my F707 and put up with using my wide angle converter. The camera is slower than I would prefer but it still takes excellent images.

Ah Yes! Well the reason I am interested in users opions is that a friend was asking my advice on the F828, told him I was not familiar and he was a little taken aback by the 'reivew' . Wanted some experienced 828 users to give it to me straight.

Like Tim, I was really wanting the 828 but after reading many (many) reviews and because of my main subject (fish) I went for the Minolta, still learning but a really nice cameraa and the autoswitch EVF/LCD may be a gimmick but is really worth having. Oh, and I just dropped it from 3' *gasp* all seems well still.
btw, I'm in the UK and Jessops will price match with Empire £569

| Probably true TIm.... there may have been a "first batch" of cameras taht were bad or defective in certain ways. I bought one early and had a few consistancy problems with it. I would take 4-5 of the exact same picture with it and there seemed to be pretty obvious differences in the pics. So I took it back to circuit city within the two weeks they have for "no questions asked" returns. They exchanged it for another one from a more recent shipment, and I have been very happy with it. It's very consistant and over time is becoming much easier to use. I realy like the controls on the 828 vs the former Sony's I've had. As for it being a bit larger...yea it it... but it still feels good to hold....it's easy! I've always been hooked by the swivel feature that Sony has had since the 505! Was a big determining factor for me. I use it all the time...especially when chasing my little one around, to take pics at "his" height vs being on my knees! hahahaaa I guess you need to try for yourself for personal preferences... Most camera shops will give you at least two weeks to run the camera through it's paces! Give it a try...nothing to lose. |

I got one three weeks ago and took it back in two days. It was just fabulous to handle and focus. The lens was great. Until I started running into that purple fringe. It's really there regardless of what people say. I think it is a matter of psychology. If people want to like it, they do not see the fault. Well, my little Canon S45 never had it, but the 828 did. It also kicked out a lot of dark photos on AE in bright sunshine with snow all around. I bought a SONY F717. I like the handling, but I have a problem. I know you guys are really brains about cameras and photography, and I am just a point and shoot guy...
Well I have dark photos on sunny days again shooting Automatic Exposure with the 717. I want to like it, but I am about to take it back. Great macro, but maybe I am handling it wrong.
Could somebody take a look at these and seriously tell me what might be wrong. Shot on Automatic Exposure, no filters. The other Photos on the website have been photoshopped for levels, contrast, etc. All from the Sonys have seemed to require this postprocessing to a greater extent.

exposures (for me), I couldn't handle it. I am at the same point with this one.

noticed you guys are really bright and talented, and a Neanderthal like me could use a push in the right direction.

I got my F828 on the 23rd of December. I have not had any trouble with it or the pictures it takes. I love it!
I just shot a Ballroom Dance Competition this last weekend that had the lights turned way down. In order to stop the motion and compensate for the low lightI had to up the ISO to 200 and use the built in flash. I had been afraid to do this, because of all the press I have read. The pictures turned out great, the parents loved them. The flash is only good out to about 20 feet, but that was no problem. I have not done anything serious with the ISO higher than 200...yet.
If I had it to do all over again, I would buy the Sony again. A friend of mine also recently bought one, and he loves his. I have not seen the CA everyone talks about, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, it just doesn't happen in the types of shots I have taken so far (as far as I can tell). The only issues I have had have been noise related and I was experimenting to see what the noise was like.
I love the camera.

Because of all of the white in those shots the camera gets fooled and meters wrong. Over expose by at least one stop and that should fix your problem. Most all cameras have this very same issue.

A very nice point and shoot camera, I sold my Sony 828 and bought a Nikon D70 with a 70-200 2.8 vr lens, very happy with the trade-up.
