Well, wouldn't an overlay just be a layer?
There's lots of types of layers and seems to me you must
use one (or more) to place an overlay (or underlay) in position...

An overlay is usually a layer that is placed so it's contents lay on top of the background image. You can use different blending modes for the layer to achieve different effects. A layer is any adjustment that has it's own blending properties that sits on top of the background picture, they can be set to different opacities and blending modes. So an overlay is almost always a layer, where a layer is not always an overlay. I'm sure someone else has a more indepth answer but that is the basics asI know it.

Photoshop has a Layers Palette, right? And those layers can have a blending mode called Overlay, right?
But sometimes Overlay has the same meaning as Layer.

So, when we're doing what we're doing in this thread, we can call it a blended photo, use of overlays, or use of layers in overlay blending mode.

I guess I was wondering if we were restricted to the use of the blending mode known as Overlay. But now that I look more closely at all the descriptions people have taken the time to write, I see that we are not restricted. We can use any blending mode on a layer or overlay.

Here is mine, for today:

Day 8
Not my best ever, but you know getting one in each day is half the battle. I will improve, I will improve, I will improve.

Oh yeah ... I'm beginning to tackle the job of catching up on commenting. I may get caught up just in time to go on vacation ... only to start over, LOL.

Another day, another experiment...

Jerseygenie asked "Very very cool texture on this gem. I'd be interested if you can remember ... how you transform the plastic container into such great patterns."
Well, because it was trial and error I could probably never repeat that pattern again, but I did give it a try . The steps, with, great margin for error, went from here: to here in a reprise and I don't like this version as much, but it does show the pattern.
There's no subtlety here at all! And remember, this is just the general idea.
:-))
first, Gaussian Blur (20.5 pixels)
then, Noise Ninja. Max lumin sliders , Max Noise Filters and 'hard edge' as high as it'll go
the moire pattern begins to appear
then, Smart Sharpen, Max the sliders (500% and 64 pix) you can always back off if you want to.
Head to Black and White conversion, and since I was trying for a light background, the reds, greens, yellows & magentas went far right and the cyans and blues went far left.
Then over to Selective Color and work the black slider on the "white, neutral and black" boxes
Back to Black & White conversion for a nice neutral tint.

I hope this helps. I wish I could be more scientific.
