What's the difference between layer opacity and layer fill? They seem the same to me, but I know they're not.

I wondered the same thing recently and found this answer in my PS 7 help file:

"In addition to setting opacity for a layer, which affects any layer styles and blending modes applied to the layer, you can specify a fill opacity for layers. Fill opacity affects pixels painted in a layer or shapes drawn on a layer without affecting the opacity of any layer effects that have been applied to the layer."

hmmm...I see. I think. Thanks!

Could a PS expert verify this summary?

The way I read it is:
- Opacity affects everything on that layer.
- Fill only affects pixel data that has been added to the layer and does not affect say a curves adjustment effect or a drop shadow 'effect'

Question:
Is there a difference when dealing with adjustment layers?
For instance, will fill affect the layer mask painting done or just the intensity of the actual adjustment layer settings?
Will opacity affect both the mask and the adj. layer settings?
