The alternate one is a more interesting composition. I think the scores would've been higher then you entry. Gives more a sense of textures.

I like the shiny sheen of you entry and gives the sense of a smooth plant. I like the graduations of colors that you were able to capture. Not enough a feeling of textures.

Am I allowed to comment on this one? :-)

This would still I believe have only scored in the low fives somewhere - for two immediate reasons: the background, which is not a useful element to this shot - it's brighter than the real textured part of your image, quite a bland tone, and really looks like carpet - the hint of out of focus texture in it distracts. The area of white flesh of the mushroom that you've included is also a pity - you've almost over-exposed it to get the membranes of the underside properly into light and focus, and the shape of that white area is not happy for your composition.

What you have done though, is light the innside of the cup perfectly: if you were to shoot looking into that 'tunnel', perhaps best done by turning the mushroom from your present set-up, so that the angles of light remain the same, you might have a much more successful shot - and I'd suggest black background too. The light on the fan of membranes as it stands is a great part of this shot though.

It might help to point out that the mushroom I shot was about 4 inches across - quite a big fella.

I prefer the one you submitted. I also thought that the title was clever and suited the image very well.
