Nikon 105 has high respect, but you may want to research this new Sigma for kicks. Sigma MACRO 70mm F2.8 EX DG

I don't think there are any lenses that will surpass it, but there are lenses out there that are cheaper and of good quality.

FYI - if you want fun and inexpensive way to experiment with Macro, instead of the big bucks for the 105vr, you might try finding a used Nikon 950/990/995 (available from reliable stores for less than $130 US).

In macro mode, you can put the front of the camera 2cm (about 3/4 inch) from the subject. A coin will fill the entire image.

Good source that has used 990/995 in stock (with return policy and warranty) is Kenmore Camera (kcamera.com). Excellent people to deal with. They ship International insured. This is not a sales pitch - I have purchased from Kenmore Camera and am very satisfied.

I have the Nikon 950, and learned alot about doing macro work before spending $$$ on a SLR Macro lens (I have Canon 10D with 100 macro). The 950 is only 2 megapixel, has slow image processing (it was top-rated when new), and the images can be a bit noisy. But it does very close Macro work!

Unedited examples from Nikon 950:

I'm not sure VR is necessary on a macro lens - i find that it's the one thing i always use a tripod for. I've got the Sigma 105 for Nikon, and i've been very happy with it.

I have the Sigma 105 2.8 macro and love it. However, if I was to do it again I would likely get the Nikon 60mm 2.8 Macro. It is very highly rated and a much better length for a 1.5 crop camera. It is lighter and cheaper than the Nikon 105 VR but jsut as sharp, maybe sharper. It also doubles as a near perfect portrait lens. As for VR in macro work it is not really needed becasue you will need a tripod anyway. Take a look:
