Nikon Capture NX Software....What do you think of it? Does the Mac and PC versions come in the same package?

I downloaded the demo to see how it compares to Lightroom's handling of NEF files. I found Capture NX to be quite unfriendly on a Mac (rather than fitting into the Mac OS, it almost attempts to create its own, with everything in odd, unfamiliar places). I can see what they're trying to do with some of the tools, and they might be fine for someone new to the experience, but anyone who's used Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, etc. might find the layout confusing (I did!).

I found no discernible difference between how Capture NX and Lightroom handle NEF files, as far as quality goes.

I think the Mac and Windows versions are distributed separately.

I don't like Capture NX, but to be honest I didn't really give it much of a chance...

I'm Seriously considering changing from PC to Mac and it looks like both version come with Nikon's software. I don't what to buy any PC only software so I'm looking into anything that people rate highly. I have a full version of XP pro,but I'm not sure what you have to do to load it on a Mac.

My capture NX version which came bundled with the D3 has both versions in the same package. As to the software itself, slow & the interface hard to get used to but that is
because I have always been using Photoshop.

NX beats the crap out of ACR once you get the hang of it. The control points are amazing. But is is heavy on the resources. If I run NX and CS2 together on my old 2400Mhz & 1 gig machine it freezes all the time. At the moment I do a lot of work with NEF's but to keep the pc from freezing I switched to Nikon Capture 4.

I am considering to switch to a notebook only. Also between Mac and PC. But what irritates me about Mac is that the standard MacBook cannot burn DVD's. And compared to discounted PC laptops the MacBook is way, way, way, way overpriced. I can get a faster pc notebook, with more RAM, more HD, a DVD writer, a 4 inch bigger screen, a better videocard etc etc etc for 60% of the price of a standard MacBook. That sucks. Apple is way too slow with lowering the price and putting better hardware in the system. My problem is that I am really friggin tired of Windows software.

That's just it, though; The MacBook is not a "discounted" laptop. Even as an entry-level notebook, they're great machines.

Use one for a few weeks, and it'll justify itself.

I have a nice PC notebook running XP but its getting buggy. I REALLY don't want to buy a PC with Vista, it to controlling over the user "Nazi computer". Mac has alway been slow to adapt thats whats been holding them back but, they seem to be getting with it now. The DVD thing sucks but i can't remember the last time i burnt one. lol

I'd say quite the opposite. In fact, they've done quite a good job at chipping away at Microsoft's monopoly. Unless you meant something else...

Only one computer--the lowest model of the MacBook--doesn't come with a DVD burner.

PC version sucks a big one. Tries to be Mac software on a PC. It is the slowest running software on my machine. Capture 4.4.4 is much better even though it is slow
it hurts sometimes. Since I'm running the D200 I don't need the NX to do what I want as I have CS. I wish Nikon would get it right software wise one day. :(

In the past Mac has not released software rights to outside companies giving PC clones the edge to corner the market.

CaptureNX is fast on my machine. Nefs open up fast easy to edit. Saving can take a bit depending how extensive the chanes you made. I find the layout ectremlely easy and straight forward though I have not tried anything else.
Also you can now get nik plugi filters native on nx.

Well, the discounted pc laptops are discounted because the new ones are introduced and have even better features. So when I look at one that is the same price as the MacBook with the Superdrive....... The RAM is not an issue, 4 gig is pretty cheap (not from the Macstore) and it will be superspeedy with it. At the moment I work on a pc laptop with a 15 inch 4/3 screen, the main thing that I am afraid of is that the 13 inch screen will be way too small?
In my new apartment I want it to be the only computer. So I will get one of those things to hook up my Wacom, keyboard and a 20-24 inch screen etc. But when I am at work or travel I want to be able to see something as well. I have yet to look at the machine itself, next time that I am in Amsterdam probably or if I meet one of my brother's friends soon. Joey and Kiwiness have Pro's with the 15 inch screens, so I cannot compare.
