I don't get into the once-a-day thing, but I'm all in for a one-a-week. Throw me on the list.

First shot, went back to an old location.

erm, doesn't the edited first thread read.....

I will start a posting thread on Friday night or Saturday morning. That gives people a few more days to join.

Posting images is like a stomach flu. Sometimes you can't hold it in.

lol, will comment on it later but first glance am not suprised to were eager to upload it ;) My personal challenge to you is to retake the shot in 6 months time to see if things get better? (I know I'll be doing that).

Man, in 6 months i'll be a national geographic photographer commisioned to take portraits of martians. No time for black and white nonsense :P

I think that the original post has been updated with everyone's name, including the future National Geographic Photographer!

I'd like to give it a shot!

Woo Hooo! I'm so happy to see some good friends here. . .and some brand new friends. I love the side challenges, but the every-day thing gets way overwhelming. This is going to be so perfect.

I'm getting excited to hang out with you guys and share black and whites for a whole year!

See ya Saturday. I'm taking my camera with me tomorrow to work. It is cooooold and very gray and foggy here. I hope I can come up with something.

I'm up for this, lurvvvvvvvvvv B&W
01/24/2008 08:59:36 AM · #61
I am curious if anyone has some books on B&W photography that they would recommend.

I would be interested in getting some feedback on that.

I check on Amazon.com, but I would rather hear from someone who found a certain book as a good learning tool.

Question about "pure" B&W. The first post has lots of examples of "almost" B&W but not a definition of B&W.

Does "warm B&W" count as "pure" B&W? If someone is printing B&W, doesn't the warmth depend on paper and inks?

B&W can be awfully cold on a screen.

LG,

There is alot of latitude - I love the "Old Chinese Elm" photo in your portfolio, btw. Purity in this area is in the eye of the beholder and hopefully no one in the thread will be obsessive about it all. My intent is that we will learn the most about B&W if we are moving in the same direction. In fact, I am not even sure what you mean about "warm B&W". One strategy that some people use is to desaturate the image somewhere in the 90%-99% range, leaving just a hint of color, which makes it warmer. The viewer does not "perceive" this normally and considers the image B&W, even though technically it isn't. Is this what you are referring to?

(here others can explain far better than I, but here goes) By focusing on B&W, the concept is to focus on the composition over the color of the image. Also there is an emphasis on the lighting and more attention to proper exposure. But, hey, I am trying to learn more here. I come to the table to offer what I have and hope that in sharing it, I too will be able to learn from others.

Is this making sense? I am sure we will adjust to each other as the Side Challenge moves along.

Re Veiolets's query about "pure" BW: all in favour of warming up the BW, or even whatever slight whatever, in spite of my often regrettable purist inclinations.

i would like to be in this as well!!

I'm glad this is the thread for posting as well. I have discovered a previous unknown skill that I seem to have for the dark and eerie.

What scares me a little is that I like it!

I believe there's going to be another thread started in a couple days for posting.

I have one day left of my paid membership; I would join to do this. Once a week, reasonable. Good rules (although I disagree that sepia/toned are not black and white, at least according to traditional photography, I promise to hold off until at least April or May) and a bunch of good people. I'm in . . .

If my name appears in the first post of the thread with the other participants by the time I get back from work tomorrow, I'll re-up. Not that that's really incentive for anyone other than me, but still . . .

Thanks for starting this, nice idea.

Rob (aka, Bruce -- don't ask, it's a long story)

Please add me to the list. I want to try more b/w and this should give me the incentive. Plus once a week is much more doable than trying for a daily post.

Hey Rob (aka Bruce) I was thinking about popping into the 'fine' City on Sunday to pick up an Architecture shot and a B&W shot for here so if you venture into the city and see a mad hat wearer hanging around Marble Hall or the Forum then say hi ;)

Thanks for the comment on my photo. I love this tree. Still need more seasons to really "get it". As for "warm" B&W, I bought one of those cheap B&W disposable cameras a year ago to see what I could do with it. When I took it back to the store for processing, I had a choice of B&W or "warm" B&W. I liked the "warm" B&W. The prints looked almost metallic but had a slight bronze sheen. Not really colored but just a sheen like a finishing layer.

I also view old B&W photos at the Eastman Museum of Photography near where I live. Those old B&W photos sure have a "mellow" look to them. I occasionally spend a few hours at the Museum's photography library. I will try to get over there and ask the curator to define "B&W".

I'm in this to learn also. There is so much written about "seeing" B&W. I must admit, I don't see B&W at all. I do try to find images with contrast.
