Hey, I know that Jan 1st has come and gone. I know that I am late to the party. However, I would like to hook up and do a B&W side challenge if there is enough interest.

So, here is my idea.
1) One B&W image each week
2) B&W images (no sepia, no selective desat, etc)
3) Image formated to a standard ratio for common printing (like 4x6,5x7,8x10)
4) Have fun, learn something, teach something, and share comments

OK, anyone interested in doing a B&W a week for the rest of '08? I will run this interest thread this week.

Oh yeah, about rule #1 and in the spirit of tardiness, you don't HAVE to post every week, but it makes it more fun for all of us. And, about rule #2, try to hold off on the "alternative B&W" stuff until at least April or May. Speaking of rules, #3, if you use some other ratio, well, whatever. But, rule #4 can not be broken.

A few more items to cover...

I will start a posting thread, which will be a different thread then this one, on Friday night or Saturday morning. That gives people a few more days to join.

It is best if you can post your images in your DPC portfolio. It is easier to view and comment resulting in more of both.

"Alternative B&W" is a term I invented yesterday around dinner time to refer to all the images you see in a B&W challenge but are not really B&W, like partial desaturation, selective desaturation, sepias, duotones, etc.

In the interest of learning and teaching, please take the time to post your camera settings, put some comments in, and post processing details. This will help give insight into the process and story behind each image.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, feel free to PM me and let's see how to incorporate it.

I'll take a stab at it ...

I'm in as long as I don't have to have fun, that's not what this is all about...ok maybe a little bit. Do count me in and you are ok with IR in b&w, right?

Yep, I'm in.

Well.... as long a it's OK to post late I think I'll join in. I'm already doing a Portrait-a-Week for '08 but since I mainly shoot for B&W this shouldn't be too tough to do. During a busy week, I may post a B&W portrait on this though, hope ya don't mind.

I'm in, but might not manage one every week, and may have to miss the first few weeks (go back to work on friday after four weeks off sick, and will have loads to catch up on...), if that's ok?

So, are we starting at Week 1 or 4?

Week 4, unless you feel driven to start from week 1...

Love to do this. I think. Like pure BW. Not keen on the ratios - cropping, when I crop, is an important part of the meal. Would maybe prefer one every two weeks. Sure to have fun and sweat at the same time.

Absolutely fine... realistically, I know there will be the occasional week through out the year when I will be out of touch also.

put me down too =] havent done a side challenge in a while
01/22/2008 06:31:09 PM · #14
That sounds great, count me in. I'm fine with rules 2 and 4 and I will do my very best for rule 1. Regarding rule 3, well....we'll see. Hopefully you won't be measuring every entry down to the nearest 0.001 inch. But if you do, don't forget to consider the standard metric sizes as well, as I might get lucky and accidentally hit one of those. :)

I'm in as well.

Cool - some needed inspiration and only mild delivery pressure - I'm in.

BWAW'08!

Am guessing this is a shot a week starting now? or Feb? If I can start now then I'm in if its ok?
01/22/2008 08:48:53 PM · #18
Good, I'm always a day late or a day early w/the other challenges. LOL! I'd like to take part and I think it's an awesome idea!
01/22/2008 08:51:55 PM · #19
I would love to be involved with this.
01/22/2008 08:59:05 PM · #20
Yep - put me down please. I prefer color photos but for some reason I end up doing a lot of black and whites. This sounds like fun!
01/22/2008 09:04:50 PM · #21
I think this is something that will not only be fun, but will help me alot in my photography. I'm like Colorcarnival. I really do prefer color, but Black and White has its place as well, and I want to get better at it.

Count me in. I want to play. When does it start and where do we post?

01/22/2008 09:44:13 PM · #22
I'm interested.....my only problem is my dialup so it's hard for me to do a lot of comments. If that's okay......

I'm in!
