So do you think it is the pictures that have changed, or the eye viewing them ?
I know I'm either getting more sophisticated, more experienced, more discerning or more jaded and as a result my tolerence for 'bad' photography is going down, along with my average vote.
Many of the things that annoy me or stand out in my earlier photos are things that I didn't even know to notice then. There is a whole other debate to be had about if that means you are becoming a better photographer or more out of touch with what the typical viewer sees...

I never dreamed my photo of the Palm trees and flowers in the fog would cause such a Stir. I know it was not a 'picture perfect' picture, I had others shot that day that were better technically, but not as interesting. So I thought I would post it to see if others liked it in spite of the technical flaws. They did and I am pleased.
I do appreciate all the comments. They are helpful, this is a good place for learning.

| Kosta, I've said this all along. I think your voting score should be visible to the public when you vote on someone’s image. If someone wants to shoot down a great image, like I've seen too many times, then everyone will know who is doing it. It won't take long for people to catch on to who is cheating or just running through without looking. If anyone asked me what I scored their picture I would be happy to tell them and why. Accountability!! That’s what the voting process needs. |

I've been on many of these sites where the voting is not anonymous, and then people vote to please each other, and to get reciprocally high votes. Voting is also a popularity contest. That's one of the reasons I am here instead of there. |

Thanks pitsaman! I was actually surprised my photo got a 5.8. Having been on here for a while I've come to some realizations about what the masses want to see and I didn't expect my shot was it. I was very happy with the photo and that's what mattered.
I finally won my first ribbon last week and in all honesty it's not one of my personal favorites. I just figured out how to get a little "wow" and knew it was going to do well. I am very pleased about it. I was sick and tired of not being a ribbon winner :) and now it gives me the chance to relax and go back to submitting shots that are in my more artistic, meaningful, and often humorous, non-traditional style for a while. (although competing for ribbons may prove to be just as addictive as DPC in general...)
Receiving a 10 from pitsaman and recognition in the forums is reward enough for me! |

what value? whose value? according to whom? value is a everchanging form of judging things.. everything has different values resting on different grounds.. now lets not go on a route to say that the challenges are just BS without any value attached to the ribbon winners... people get to vote and highest rating photo comes up on top..
simple as that.. |

| I've had a few people ask me if the two photos I entered in the current challenges have been digitally manipulated. I don't own any of the nose editing plug-ins and I usually only crop a photo and maybe change the colour levels slightly. Unfortunately, I think my votes this week reflected this. I'm almost thinking I may put something in brackets in the title like, (No PhotoShopping) just so people know they're looking at a photograph and not digital art. It's too bad the photographer's comments can't be included with the photograph so people can make a more informed decision when they vote. |

I, for one, really love your photographic sensibility. Too many wine, grapes and cheese shots in this world already, anyway. Don't change a thing, please. :)

I`ve noticed, like others, the change in voting patterns over the last few weeks and actually mentioned it in another thread around the time of the "Garage Art" challenge.
I found a lot of really good images well down the list and couldn`t figure out what was happening.
I`m now beginning to wonder if it is a "Photoshop Paranoia" that`s taking over the site.
I actually received a mail today which included an apology for voting my "Four Elements" submission low because the person was convinced it had been manipulated. However, after seeing the original and realising it had only been cropped, they felt an apology was in order...(which says a lot for that persons integrity.)
Could this be part of the reason for the quality images that are not fulfilling their promise ? |
