Competency of the voting public is falling drasticly IMHO !
I can't believe that image like this:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/187/thumb/59994.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/187/thumb/59994.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
or
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/187/thumb/60644.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/187/thumb/60644.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
are getting 5.8 score and being placed at 40 something ....

well...
i should say that i gave both of those photographs "6s" and although in a second look the first one might have deserved like a "7" may be... but they still lack what i really look in a photograph... i mean i am fairly dissapointed with the result i got with my photograph, that doesnt mean it is bad by any means... i love it... that is why i took it,created it... i think voting issue comes down to what people find interesting and want to see... everyone have their unique style of photography, and some are more appreciated in this website.. such as, myself, being on the digital editting side of things realize that my pictures with heavy editting on them dont get rated high.... that doesnt tell me my photo sucks... that tells me to submit different style of pictures.. and you know where i get my inspiration?.. from "jmsetzer"s photography.. although i like most of his work my main inspiration comes not because i think his pictures are the best.. but it tells me what kind of pictures get good rating on this website...his style of photography gets better response from the avarage wiever of this website...
i hope i made sense..

But I do think the voting is very much cliche driven, photos with literal representation and little quality are getting better scores :-(
02/23/2004 03:24:35 AM · #4
honestly... i think the voting system is fair and square... even i have the greatest problem because the photographs that i really love gets slammed down sometimes.. i do tend to think that they dont deserve that... but, what do you do.. if people liked it. they would have rated it higher

I agree with Kosta...wholeheartedly...I did take a 2 month break..not because of the site... but because of a Mothers death...and My Wife had surgery... and I have noticed a difference.. probally due to the site getting bigger..maybe the rule changes...a number of things.. I worked my butt off.. on my last photo... thinking I would get a "6" at least...but.. people are toying with me... with 2's and 3's....lol oh well... gives you better incentive..for next time...cheer up Pitsaman

I know what you mean. I like those photos better than some of the finishers in the top 10. People seem to vote down those pictures where the contestants actually tried something daring and different. Instead, we get the pretty, cliche-driven pictures that win. When I look at the results of the challenges, I usually start in the middle of the pack and work my way to last place. I see most of the truly interesting entries there.

lets say: "none of us is as stupid as all of us" as a resolution... because it seems every one individual thinks he knows better... than everyone together must know wrong...

Everyone has their favorites. I always think I can guess the top 3 and are always suprised to see them lower.

This was my pick for the top 3.

Jonpink I like your top 3. They are natural looking beautiful photographs. I think the new editing rules have made this site in to more of a PS-challenge. There is some pictures in this challenge looks unnatural to me, more like digital art.

which ones?
02/23/2004 05:26:39 AM · #11
I dont mean your picture jonpink, and idont want to point out one picture. I just see this trend, IMHO
02/23/2004 09:17:11 AM · #12
IMHO I think most people is not taking enough time to appreciate the pictures when they vote. There's an interesting trend: the commenter's average is ALWAYS higher than the average of the people with cameras voting on the picture. I feel that is because commenters take a little more time looking at the picture while thinking their comments. Unfortunately it is easier just to take a glance to it, pick a number from 1 to 5 and vote.

I would bet it is more likely because people are commenting more on shots they like than shots they don't. This would boost the averages for commenters since they would be skewed to the high side.

When the new rules were in the experimental stage we were told that low votes would weed out the overly manipulated images or "digital art". So you don't have to point them out in the forums but should vote them low. I too feel that the images that have won ribbons in the last half dozen or so challenges were not as good as before. It's hard to call many of them DA but they are generally not among the photos I have voted high.

Well Kosta I gave you a 10 for the flowers and palms pic and was very surprised to see how low you were,
Don't despair, you can't please everyone, it is a great picture,
Paul.

It may be, but in my pictures, the people who comment not necessarily like the shot and make comments pointing out their dislikes, and even though, the commenter's average is always higher.

That commenters vote higher than non-commenters is not a new trend. I think it has always been like that.

I just did a little math and found that my average vote on a ribbon winner for a challenge ending in '04 is 5.4318. To me that means that I have ranked the ones that the group has liked best as slightly below average.

I agree with pitsaman. There have been a lot of well above average photos that were outscored by lesser quality shots recently. I would put the two he posted in that catergory, and could easily find a couple dozen more. I don't understand why this is. Can't really connect it to the new rules.

I have noticed in the last 4 challenges that, of the high scorers, I am voting only 1 or 2 as top three....other than that, the photos I have been voting higher on are ending up more towards the middle to lower end. Whats up with that? I wonder if my opinion of what a good photo is, is changing, compared to the masses here.
02/23/2004 10:24:27 AM · #19
You cant please everyone, and DPC is a perfect place to learn this. No matter how good or bad or creative or bland or if its just a quick snap or aomething I haxe worked for a week on I get 5.3 to 5.5 point spread EVERY week. Also I constantly get comments that have nothing to do with the quality of the shot... Im sure others have this same problem. My advice, do it to please yourself and have fun. If your not thick skinned you cant hang with this group. IMO!

I must have the taste of the masses as I usually vote the top 10 higher than the others..
