I have been away from DPC for almost a year, just getting back into things this past week. I hope to enter a few challenges this year, however, before that, I am going to comment on 100% of the images in the Best of 2007.

I am by no means an exceptional photography (I actually don't like my photos and hope to improve dramatically in 2008) nor do I consider myself better than anybody here, so when I am providing a comment that may offend (and I know I will be), I apologize...they are simply my thoughts on your image at the point of viewing. I will also display my score and again, apologize.

My goal is to simply provide my view and hopefully some constructive criticism.

I do not have an image in the challenge.

BTW...the overprocessing of skies that has seemed to become almost the norm now is awful...For every ten images that have noticeably excessive processing, 1-2 are excellent, 1-2 are okay, 6-8 are horrific.

It's good to be back and again...MY APOLOGIES!!!

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!

SERIOUSLY...GOOD LUCK!!!

All i ask is that you take your time. remember that the most beautiful photos have subtleties that can only be noticed with a bit of time. If you are going to give me harsh criticism at least have the courtesy to truly look at my photo.

Agreed...I will do my best, however, it does sound like you are lacking some confidence with your submission ;)

Sounds like Elvis has some of those "over-processed" skies in his entry.

Truthfully, I love Elvis's work. Here's one of my faves of his:

Talk about overprocessing...I destroyed this image (which is good IMO) with my crappy work on the red light.

What a great idea! Good luck, and if I get internet connection at home before voting ends, I may try to join you. Maybe not all, but I'll shoot for at least 30% comments.

Hmmm... so many apologies. I find that the most "interesting" thing.

Agreed - commenters should realise that some photos are harder to take than others... and capturing a split second of expression can be a great moment of timing rather than a 'snapshot'.

Agreed, I feel like there's some sordid back story here that mere innocent newbies might be missing out on...

Lol, yeah, I never trust a guy who apologizes so much in such a short period of time.

That's a lot of commenting to set yourself up for! Looking forward to your comment on mine. Don't worry about not feeling "good enough" to comment on someone else's stuff. It's the best way of learning how to improve your own photos, and the whole point of this site.

Edited to add:
I just had a quick look at your profile. With nothing but 6's showing on your profile page, you have a great eye and can certainly give many of us some useful pointers.

wow, y'all are a suspicious/tough bunch. :) :/

I'm sure the guy's legit, it's just that if all he's saying is that he's sorry for being away then, mate, you're forgiven. The way that this seems to be huge deal makes me think that he was forced into exile from DPC for getting drunk one night, going home and working his way through everyone's entries posting random obscenities and links to porn sites as comments!

Mate if you did that, no worries, happens to the best of us. If not it might be a fast way of filling your promised comment quota! :-p

edit - grammar (language student, makes me nervous...)

Over processed? Na, it must be my monitor going out.

LOL...We all go through an obsession with Gothic Glow...Had to go to counselling to get over that addiction.

UPDATE...100 images reviewed and commented so far...

Good News - Average vote cast thus far is 6.27 and there are some that I think I will definately bump.

Bad News - I have passed over some very weak images, and have not mustered enough courage yet to provide my comments and score. Also, there are some images that I think I will definately bump down.

Any bumps I make, up or down, will be identifed in my comments.

First comments...excessive overprocessing that have hampered more than helped (mind you, some are extremeley well executed). Too many images with the horizon smack dab in the middle of the image. Let's mix it up here.

Back to voting...a couple of more drinks and I can start to go back to some of the weaker images...

Let me start by apologizing...I really don't mean to complain, but you aren't very efficient; perhaps less drinking and more typing. We are all on the edge of our seats waiting for your words of sage wisdom on our humble snapshots. Please don't prolong the suspense! Slam me now!!!

Funny thing is, I have seen people drool all over over-processed shots and award them ribbons and completely miss the point on artfully composed shots that don't happen to fall within the "rule of thirds." But I am sure that you have a better eye than that. Right???

Oh yeh...I am sorry...

Who cares. Oh, I'm sorry.

Interesting point, but I have to agree with a lack of basic technicalities in the "Best of 2007" challenge. I myself have noticed quite a few with the horizons tilted one way or the other. I think that for a "best of" "advanced editing" challenge a person could rotate their picture so that the horizon is level. And actually, that's permitted in "basic editing."

45 % have been rated and commented on (218 images) with an average score given of 5.8 (I think the fact that I am commenting on every image has the curve about .6 to .8 higher than if I did not comment).

Not sure what happened while I was away from DPC, but we have an emergency here. Some have commented that I should be one to talk about overprocessing when I have images in my portfolio like this one...
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/29477/120/177869.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/29477/120/177869.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
...its very simple, the overprocessing in this image was the result I was going for.

Some of the sky shots are on the cusp of ridiculousness and the goal they were trying to acheive was some added punch not completely destroying a perfectly fine image.

We need to change the Advanced Editing rules to ensure that you only qualify to use Advanced Editing upon completion of a 4 year program on digital processing and a minimum of 3000 processed images that are not grossly overdone.

Please tone it down people...many of you are destroying great photographs.

Only 262 comments to go!!!

I'll be interested to see how many people mark your comments as helpful. If you are indeed being as brutal as you say you are, it may not be that many!
