aimeethetoo and I are coming up on our two year anniversary here at DPC. But its not only our anniversary it would be our kids anniversary as well since one of them was not only our model in each of our first entries but between the two of them they are our most used models.

We initially bought our first camera solely to take pics of the kids. There was no alternate plan of entering challenges or starting a business but to capture their every day lives just as any parent would.

Finding DPC was a turning point. We learned how to go beyond taking the everyday snapshot into capturing something a bit more creative. And over the past 2 years our kids have not only grown up in our home but they have grown up in full view of the DPC community. Often when we use Aidan or Rowan in our shots we get comments in voting referring to them by name. And for all the complaining and fears we hear about entering another stupid kid shot (not saying that there aren’t any stupid kid shots – I have entered my share) we have found that kid shots can thrive well here at DPC.

And we aren’t the only ones who have figured that out. There are others on this site who have figured out the same thing. Judi, metatate, drachoo and others are allowing the DPC community to see their kids “grow up DPC”. And not just through their general portfolio images but as high scoring challenge entries as well.

This thread is just a shout out to the parents who submit pics of their kids on DPC – WAY TO GO AND DON’T STOP!!! And this thread is also to those who are nervous about submitting pics of their kids for fear of the “stupid kid shot” backlash. Ignore that. Why do you have a camera in the first place? You may own it to make money as a photographer – but in the long run whose pics are you going to be looking at when you are 80, and whose pics are you going to be sharing with others down the road. Is it going to be that lit match shot, the pic of the refracting glassware or the portrait of the engaged couple who odds are aren’t even married anymore? If it is – I will say I am sorry for you right now. I am going to be showing my kids. ;)

And now just some silly stats and thumbnails.
Challenges entered – Tim - 212 / Aimee – 69
Entries with our kids – Tim – 52 / Aimee – 11
Lowest score with kid – Tim 4.5315 / Aimee 5.0575
Highest score with kid – Tim 7.6453 / Aimee 6.3388
Kid images with ribbons – 5
Kid images top ten – 9

My first entry of each kid –
And where the DPC journey has led us –

And just because I love looking at pics of my kids here are a couple more faves –

And on that note, post your “stupid kid shots”. The low scorers, the high scorers, the ones in between. Give a shout out to those whose kids you know from their entries at DPC. Take joy in the images that will last forever, the ones that have meaning. Take joy in your kids.

Sheez, not more kid pics. {°¤°}

Just kidding, of course. You and Aimee have really done exceptionally well. I think my favourite is probably the Tooth Fairy one. ;-Ăž

Word up Mr. & Mrs. Foo !

I did a rough count and it looks like about 13% of my entries have been of my kidlets. They're so darn cute !

:-)

An added bonus for me are some extra points with the wife, and I need all I can get. By taking a lot of neat photos of our kidlets, my value to her is increased. It's no secret that our daughters are her top priority, she's the most awesome mom on earth! I'm just the guy who take photos of our girls. ;-)

ETA: These are roughly 3-8 months (not in order)... can't wait to see what this year holds!

Mine isn't so little, but she's definitely been influenced by DPC as well;

Awwww, your kid is sooo cute. I have two myself. At least when people show me pics of their kitty's, 99% of the time I won't be lying when I tell them how cute they are.

But then when you've been here too long, it can really have an adverse effect.

Even your pets get humiliated and now learn to shun you as well:

The effects are not reversible. Run while your kids & pets are still normal.

I dont know what everyone has against kid shots! I think kids are much harder to shoot than adults, and I think if you can get the kid shots down, the adults come much easier.

I love seeing kid shots. They are our future and I love watching them grow. Its awesome to be able to share that here.

Tim, you and Aimee have done such an awesome job with your kids. They are just perfect little models! They each have their own little personalities that SHINE through in their photos. Keep up the fantastic job!

Cool thread, and many of the the photos demonstrate the growth of the photographer as much as the kids (certainly true in my case):

There's about 14 ribbons among those pics. Who says the voters don't appreciate kid shots? ;-)

My wife's pregnancy was one of the reasons I became more interested in photography. Unfortunately I didn't have an "eye" at the time of her pregnancy, but it did start me down an interesting journey. In the meantime, my son has become "victim" of my photography so much that he can't be near a camera without turning into a ham.

The journey begins (pardon the awful photo)...

still shooting point and shoot...

poking fun at Slippy

the little man and his girlfriend (they have since broken up)

finally getting him involved in Challenges

first Christmas

more challenges and a "tear sheet"

now that he's hooked on the camera, and a little older, he becomes a big focus in my photography and challenge submissions.

And most recently....

gotta get rid of that binky!

Cool post of all the photographers that use their kids pics in challenges. My first submission of my child just completed voting in the spectacles challenge. It didn't score the score I usually would like but alot of people got a laugh out of the photo and left some nice comments. On top of it I got a funny photo of my daughter we can look at through the years ahead and smile. I probably wouldln't have done that photo if not for the challenge, so I'm glad I did enter. Great post to remind me of what's important, have fun and more importantly have fun with your family!
