E.g. to tell me a picture is "blury" when it has been reduced from a pin-sharp 12Mb RAW image to a 640x400ish pixel, 150kb JPEG ain't so usefull. Also, arguing the toss about whether a building is actually abandoned "as such" is just pointless (I mean come on, get a life).

But also everyone plays on the same field - we all have to shoehorn images into 150kb from 8+ megapixels. I've learned ways from this forum on how to help preserve quality when reducing that I had no idea about.

Also the challenge was Abandoned Buildings...otherwise you could just shoot any old building?

Is there a way to see the votes on your pic during voting? All I see is the summary to the left on my home page and a few comments if I click on the image. Thanks.

At this point in time, you can not see each individual vote until the challenge is over. Once voting is complete, you will get a breakdown of every single vote you were given.

Obviously I am not alone in having to faff about resizing for submission. The original looks great to me, and if I don't win every vote because I havent spent ages fiddling with photoshop optimising my DPC submission format settings then I'm sure I will get over it.

To be clear (and I think I have been), I was complaining about the petty comments.

I dont mean to be rude, but if there is any doubt your mind that a ruined church is an abandoned building then save your breath.

Anyways, that's my last post on the matter. Bye.

I found there were a lot of fuzzy barn shots...and after about 50 of them it tended to polarise the difference in quality for me...I was more generous to the good shots and a tad harsher on the poor ones. I don't know how anyone else felt but after voting for 99% of them I felt the general quality was down...some absolutely amazing shots in there though. I'll be interested to see the average at the end...

luckily i don't have a fuzzy barn shot :D

Fuzzy barn really does sound like a euphemism doesn't it? :O

Sod this for a game of soldiers, I'm off to Flickr, where criticism is actually constructive!

I participate on both sites. Both have their place and are completely different environments. Some stuff of mine that has gotten a lot of attention on flickr has totally bombed over here, and vice versa. I do think cheap praise is easier to come by on flickr, especially if you participate in "invites" groups. (Which I don't do) I've seen quite a few so-so pictures with dozens of "Perfect Photographer" awards. Makes me say "WTF?". I like to post my photos to a handful of appropriate groups, including some where I am a regular. If I get a lot of remarks, I know I have a good one. If it gets few views or comments, that is also a form of feedback.

The feedback here can be quite harsh sometimes. If you can develop a thick skin and don't take it too seriously, you will also get a lot out of it.

You can't actually see the votes during voting, but several members have written spreadsheets to track your scoring and if you only got one or two votes since the last entry, it is easy to figure out what those votes were. Here a link to that discussion thread:

I was asked by the site council to submit the original for review. So I guess I understand why the photo is being rated less. Anyway I'm happy with the rest. But I really hope somehow it manages to get a 6.0.... but for that some miracle should happen.

The scores in this challenge seem to be really low - Kind of makes me feel better about my score! Not expecting this one to do too well though...

I have noticed in tracking several of my scores with a spreadsheet, that the charts shows a definite trend in when the scores go up and down. It appears to be consistent between several challenges and the graphs are similar. Certain types of voters seem to come out within the same time frame.

I'll be interested in what the average for the commenters is. They seem to really like it (it has dimensions and depth and nice detail according to them). One even hoped for a top 10 for me (thx)!

I have noticed the same thing. That being said, I can't wait until this "group" is done, I'm in a free-fall.

I think I'm going to start tracking when comments come in, too... unless the low comments is because this shot (and most of my recent entries) are so perfectly "average". /end disgust with self.

Myelf, I don't have a problem with voting in the challenges I enter. I don't feel it affects my judgement on others, and I feel a stronger obligation to participate in the ones I enter.

Just my own , your mileage may vary.

Well I dont mind voting, but if someone feels that my comments dont match my vote I dont wanna hear grief about it later.

Well, this is my first entry in a challenge and have voted in only a couple of challenges, but I also feel that bit of obligation to vote in the challenge I entered. I guess if I expect people to vote on my submission, I should vote on theirs.

On a side note...

I'm still floating around a 5.3 and 5.2

Is it customary to have a low number of comments two days into voting? Normally when I look through the challenges after voting... most entries have several comments.

Well, they won't know your specific vote unless you tell them.

alright alright already. I vote after I comment them :)
